The background that Superb is not sold in US

Featured Replies

Hi, Guys, I am a new comer.

I Want to check the Superb's selling price in different markets, especially the price in UK, USA, China etc, but find that Superb is not sold in US. Any one know any background that Superb is not released in US Market?

My first though is that would be VW's market strategy, obviously Superb is a big competitor to Passat or other VW's models...

Any other sharing? :)

No Skodas are sold in the USA. They're not an established brand over there.

Just VW and Audi for the 'everyday' VAG brands over there. And even then they don't sell every model there.

Thank you, Wardy. Yes, this is the fact, but not sure why?

There are Beetle, CC, Eos, GTI, Jetta, Passat, Golf, Tiguan, Touareg etc...most of the Models are sold in US...

Much more interest in the background now. My second though it will be too much cost to establish this Skoda brand in US, and with so many competitors in US...

Guys, don't tell me that Superb does not meet US Safety requirement : )

I guess you would have to ask the Skoda Marketing department that question...

Or probably whoever's responsible globally for VAG brand development and placement.

I would have thought the cost of setting up a nationwide dealer network in the US would cost a huge sum of money and with the way the US economy is supposed to be at the moment, how long would it be before they realistically made enough money back to make the investment worthwhile.

Would be nice if Skoda did come to the USA, I could see myself selling Superbs and Yetis out of a nice new showroom in Tampa!

Also, as seen by Evo and Skoda UK while out there for the Bonneville runs - there is quite refreshing attitude to the brand, as nobody's not stuck with a pre-conceived idea.

I think they'd do well - but as said by James, not exactly the best time to be starting from scratch over there currently!

You do also have to deal with other issues, mainly the types of vehicle bought. In the USA for example, the Jetta outsells the Golf massively. Because they prefer a 'sedan'. The number of pick-up trucks and 'activity' vehicles is also large, especially when compared with the UK and Europe.

Thank you, James...but is it easier to use the existing VW's dealer networks? If VW can not use the existing dealer networks, could we say that VW not yet fully "owned" Skoda, though VW bought Skoda years ago?

With such bad economy situation, I though Superb is a better choice than most of American brand cars : ) for Gas saving, oh, yes, also bigger space : )

I just finished the comparison of the price in different Geo, which is just for fun...it is really interesting...

Agree and thank you, Wardy.

I would guess VW group don't want Skoda and VW sat on the same forecourt. If people started to see the quality and price of the 2 brands side by side, in a market where Skoda has a good / no reputation VW would suffer IMO.

Agree. They wouldn't have the two brands sat side-by-side.

Why would Skoda want to enter US market when they cannot make enough cars to satisfy the markets they are in now? Just look at the many posts on this forum about very long delivery times, they would be mad to create new markets unless they greatly upped production capacity.

I am against any action by Skoda that could increase the already very long lead time for my new Superb!

Chris, you know why it takes so long to get a new Superb?

I though it is because there is not enough customer order to "greatly upped production capacity"...If there are too many orders, I though VW will be very very happy to expand their manufacture capacity...oh, the government is also very happy since it will have more available job opportunities...

Well another possibility would be to build the car in USA,like they do in China, but I guess that would be a long term investment,a risky one looking at the USA economy.

How would Skoda fit in the USA? Above or below VW?

What I have noticed is that some Skoda models are priced higher than the equivalent VW in China....

that's an interesting observation. How come?

I really have no idea, historical preceptions?

Not why Skodas are not sold, but VWs are made in Mexico and so are easier/cheaper to sell in the US.

Shipping all the way from the EU may give Skodas a higher price, but still with low profits, especially with the $ being so low.

Skoda has done enough "damage" to VW here in Europe :giggle:

VW Wouldn't want the same trouble on the other side of the Atlantic B)

I visist Arkansas regularly and in a two week visit I will "usually" see perhaps 2 or 3 VW's and 2 or 3 BMW's, and I did see an Audi once.

In the heart of America, VW has nothing to be damaged by the sale of Skoda's, but the same is true that, if they can't sell VW's then Skoda's won't sell either, unless they make a great big bloody pickup truck!!!!

I think the main reason (apart from Skoda not building the 'correct' type of car for the US market) is that VW is not seen the same way in North America as it is here.

Over there VW is seen as an economy brand. If you've just passed your driving test you get one of those cute and cheap little Golf thingys.

There's not really any room for a cut-price version of VW, which is exactly what Skoda is.

And a car made in a "Commy" country would not quite draw them in either.

Could you even import one? Would it meet US DOT standards?
