Some info on towbars and spare wheels

Featured Replies

Hi there

As a complete newby to Skoda and a soon to be owner of a 110 Diesel Yeti SE I have trawled through this forum for some information and am completely confused about towbars and spares.

The car I am buying was reg July this year and comes as ex demo without a spare! Not impressed with this inflation kit rubbish. I like a spare-change done, dusted and on my way to hopefully get the flat repaired. Gunk means they dont like repairs just replacement. No good if the tyre gets shredded. I tow a caravan and like to be prepared and I don't want to be stuck on the hard shoulder with a caravan in tow-too risky to hang about any longer than necessary. Why is the dealer I am purchasing from telling me the spare is £75 whereas my local skoda is quoting me £250 for a spare and tool kit?

I'm not bothered about lack of boot space with having a spare as boot and car are loads bigger than Ibiza I currently have anyway. If I need to buy the full kit do I need a different boot liner?

The dealer I am buying from is quoting me £950 for a skoda double electrics towbar whereas the local skoda garage is quoting me £349 for aftermarket and £675 for Skoda genuine. I dont have towbar prep and where I'm buying from tells me that if I dont have a genuine Skoda towbar if a fault develops they wont cover it on warrenty whether skoda fit it or not.

Anyhow any advise greatly received.

Cheers Gillian

Hi and welcome,

not a tow bar expert but you will find the price does vary depending who fits it. Understand the correct coding of the electrics can pose the biggest challenge for many fitters. Probably best asking your question in the main Yeti forum as this area is used mianly for technical guides and 'how to' threads.

Regard the spare then £75 is the factory fit price, whereas the £250 is the price for buying the bits and pieces separately not as a factory option. If your supplying dealer is offering to fit the kit at the factory price I'd take it with both hands.

Hope that helps,

TP

Hi Gillian,

I am the same as you, the inflation kit is a copout so a spare wheel does not need to be fitted as standard. I ride motorcycles off road and most of us carry an inflator kit , 90% of the time they don't work for the reasons you already stated. I had my spare fitted as part of the original spec. It comes with a new boot floor and side mouldings with the jack etc. I think the two vertions are shown in the handbook. After delivery fitting means the original boot floor and mouldings have to be removed and disposed of so the price is more. Try a swap, I did see on the forum some time ago someone who wanted to go back to the original, Large boot, and wanted to exchange the bits with someone who wanted a spare. As far as the tow kit is concerned I can only advise you to look at the forum "Towing" and "Tow bars again", I am afraid there is no escape from the crazy prices, the Skoda electrics alone are over £200, unless you want to take a chance on an aftermarket installation, ie. if a problem arises in connection with the cambus wiring system or the installation Skoda would not be interested. Your choice, best of luck.

GB.

Remember the spare wheel is a semi full size tyre, speed limited to 50mph. It is not a skimpy skinny tyre saver but a 'massive' 195 wide tyre. A full size tyre does not fit in the boot if you have specified the spare wheel. During the winter I take the spare wheel floor etc out and fit the standard floor, and restrain the spare wheel to the side of the boot, vertically. I can't use the parcel shelf.

I will be having a full size (215/60 R16) winter tyre as a spare tyre this year, after damaging a winter tyre beyond repair last winter and having to move back to summer tyres too early for my liking.

Sorry but this is confusing me.

If I request a spare and tool kit,so far as I'm aware it is a slightly smaller 16" wheel and tyre that fits in the polystyrene under floor fitment that comes with the tool kit. I was expecting to get the kit that I saw at a local skoda dealers in their demo car.I know I lose some boot space but thought that was all. For £250 I would expect to get the whole kit. I'll have to check this out with Skoda.

Cheers

Hi,

for your £250 I would expect you to get the 16" 195/60 size spare wheel, jack, wrench, 3 polystyrene boxes and false floor cover as shown in the spare wheel guide.

On a new vehicle order this costs £75 but you don't get the tyre weld or compressor.
