Gear Selection Problem

Featured Replies

Strange thing. When I arrived home I noticed that my gear stick became slack and no usual kind of resistance when selecting gears. The car is not stuck in gear and it seems the only gear I can get is third. If I use the gear stick and select every gear including reverse the car will still move forward in third.

It feels like something on the gear stick or gear leaver has come apart. There is no clutch or gear box faults as the clutch is new and there are no strange noises when pulling away or when idle.

So in short, the only gear I can select is third. The gear lever will move in the normal positions for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th and reverse yet the there is no slection only for third.

Any help would be appreciated.

I assume you have checked the linkage on the top of the box, and under the gator too. When you say you can "select" that gear, but that mean you have placed the gearlever in the correct position for 1st, 2nd, etc? When you are doing this, is there movement from the two control cables on the top of the gearbox?

The linkage might need adjusting, but it sounds more like the linkage (or some part of it) has broken to me.

Also check that the small return air hose which attached to the air filter housing is still attached and not dropped down (as this as been known to cause gear selection issues in the past).

As said above.

Gotta be linkages, as gear selection OK but remains to stay in a particular gear.

After looking in the engine bay today the upper cable that selects gears 1, 2, 5 and reverse has a plastic connector bolted to the selector leaver. It is the plastic connector that has snapped right where the bolt goes through. I can only get this part from a dealership :-(

So, if anyone else has had this problem, the plastic connector can be disconnected from the end of the cable and can also be released from the leaver selector. The part number is KKF 1J0 711 260 although Skoda or Volkswagon may have the last two digits as 56 or 65.

Thanks for your comments and I hope my problem here may help someone else.

Glad you all fixed up mate, bloody cars are always out to drain our pockets. LOLemoticon-0148-yes.gif
