petrol in a diesel

Featured Replies

just put £25 petrol in my diesel superb, was told to fill to the neck with diesel? help

No, no, no. Petrol can cause a significant amount of damage to the seals in a diesel engine. I did it once in my Saab. I pushed the car to the edge of the forecourt and called the AA. Even turning the ignition can prime the pump and send petrol through the system. Cost me about £300 for a full fuel line flush including having the tank removed and flushed.

Don't take the advice you have been given, it may have been ok in a car 20 years old, but not these days :-)

WHAT HE SAID!!!

If you JUST put some petrol in AND DON'T TURN THE INGNITION, then they will just drain the tank and you can fill up. If you do anything else, it's a full system flush PLUS the cost of a whole tank of wasted petrol!!

You CAN get away with just filling with diesel if you've added a very small amount of petrol, say a litre or two before you spot your mistake, but no way you'd get away with that on £25 worth.

What twelvebears said, once stuck 3 litres in a 52 plate Mundano TDCi. This was when our local BP had the same coloured pipes on one of their Ultimate Diesel and Petrol brands. Yep I'm a dunce, albeit a distracted dunce, I know.

The engine already ran like a bag of spanners anyway since the Ford dealer had done an emissions software update on it, admitted on collection they had failed to recalibrate the injectors due to lack of time, and then denied they'd ever said that when trying to get it fixed. So frankly it couldn't have been much worse.

Decided to risk it for a biscuit, filled up to top with diesel, so about 55l diesel + 3L petrol. It ran well, in fact if anything it was an improvement.

Going off topic, (sorry) that vehicle opened my eyes about the myth of adverts saying "ex company car, serviced acc to the book." type of stuff.

I had it from new for 3 years and 80k. It was, from my perspective, serviced fully according to the book. It was only when, thanks to an honest service adviser, I caught the lease company in saying they were booking it in for a full service, and actually only ordering a lights and levels check that I realised what had been going on. Service guy admitted my car had not had a spanner on it for two years. :o

I know it's not much help to you know, but check out www.stopdiselmisfueling.co.uk, I got a fuel filler cap from them, as I had always driven petrol cars before now, and was afraid of making this mistake, the cost of the filler cap is about 10% of the cost of having your tank flushed, and then there is also the cost of the wasted fuel.

A small amount of petrol in a diesel wont hurt, in fact years ago we used to add petrol to the tanks of trucks (1/2 gallon to 50 gallonsof diesel) to stop the diesel freezing in the winter.

However anything over 2 litres in the tank and as the others have said dont start the car push it off the pumps and call AA etc and drain the tank and refill (ensure full tank) with diesel

Which engine have you got?

If it is PD you may get away with it - although £25 petrol is still a lot (even at todays prices!)

If it is CR houston you may have a problem..

If it were me I would call the AA fuel assist service
