4 x 4 easy to do?

Featured Replies

I have been trying to find out why it is a problem to fit four wheel drive to cars (factory of course, not in the comfort of your shed  )

It's just that VW already have the four motion system on a pretty basic golf which is the same platform as the octavia,it is also obvioucly used on the fabia rally car so I presume in theory it would be easy to produce a four wheel drive fabia(as rumoured) and skoda are of course again producing the 4x4 estate .

So what are the mechanical problems? Just trying to get my head round why skoda even consider doing a 200 bhp(+?) 150 mph car with front wheel drive when the technology is tried tested and available  Is it just money? IMprezas are all 4x4's arent they?

Impreza's are indeed all 4x4 even the non turbo sport version...

i think this has been brought up before by someone wanting to make his vRS 4wd, the answer then was to buy a 1.8T 4x4 and make it look like a vRS.

i suppose they could of made the vRS octy 4x4 only reason i can think of is they wanted the vRS to be the faster Skoda made at the time and the 4x4 is heavier than the vRS so this would have contributed to the design i suppose.

more power to the standard car and 4x4 would have been awesome though.

Different floor pan, different gearbox, propshaft, rear diff, rear drive shafts, different fuel tank etc etc, not to mention the Haldex with its ECU plus different ABS controller (I think). Quite a lot of extra mechanicals and cost involved which, in the case of the Octavia 4X4, is not reflected in the list price.

Best kept secret in the Skoda range :D:D:D

Even the Justy aka Suzuki Swift
