Knocking diagnosed as driveshaft, opinions?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Over the last month or so I have been hearing a knocking, gradually getting worse, coming from my front left corner. It occurs at slow to medium speed ie 20-45mph, mostly noticeable when going around roundabouts ie loading the left side.

The noise is a thud thud thud about once a revolution of the wheel and is thus road speed related. It is also evident, though less so, at higher speeds and on right hand corners. The corner doesn't have to be very tight.

I initially diagnosed this as a wheel bearing but on jacking the car up the bearing seems fine and there is a cracking coming from the transmission side, holding the driveshaft and rotating the wheel produces this sound so i now believe it to be the outer cv joint gone.

Does this tie up with previous experience or opinion of anyone?

Thanks.

I keep getting similar noise from my right hand cv joint when pulling out of junctions,

Just a suggestion but have you had wheels off recently as i would check wheel nuts are tight as cv joint only usually knock at low speed unless there absolutly shot

Certainly drive shaft related IMO.

I had a split in gater and the grease had come out. Made a low level clicking, grinding noise.

I would first remove Drive shaft CV joint gaters and repack the joint with grease. See if that helps. Did for me.
