Steering re-assurance

Featured Replies

I have a 2005 vRS and I have noticed when travelling at speed on the motorway that the steering feels very light and also that it feels like it wants to wander a bit. I am pretty sure it isnt wandering across the road but it just feels that way. Is this the normal steering feel for the vRS? Or is there something I should be looking into, also if this is the normal feel is there anything I can do to fix it (i.e uprated bushes etc) as I dont like the way it feels.

Thanks

Changing out the console bushes for something harder (there's hundreds of threads about doing it) and checking the TRE's and tie rods don't have any play in them. Also overinflated and worn tires will cause that sort of feeling on the roads at speed.

I don't have a vRS, but my normal 1.9TDi feels quite light on the steering at 40-60mph on crappy (crumbling due to the previous hard winter) road surfaces, although it does feel more "normal" on motorways. It is possible to set the power-assisted steering weight using VCDS, if you want (assuming everything simonbt suggests checking is all OK).

I have the Fabia estate and at about 80+ the front end also goes light.

I dont think the power steering adjustment will help as it feels like its an aerodynamic issue as headwinds or tailwinds will alter the speed at which this happens. never had an issue below 80 and sometimes over 100 is fine but in general it will go light somewhere around these sort of speeds and then crosswinds can shift the car dramaticly on the road - and we have had a lot of gusty winds lately

I have upgraded bushes and although general handling has improved this is one aspect that has not changed.

I have considered the LCR splitter but cant tell if this is just fitted for looks or if it would in some way change the aerodynamics so have not bothered.

lowering would probably help but I dont want to loose the practicality of the standard ride height.

of course the simple solution is to go slower
