Oil cconsumption and replenishment

Featured Replies

Folks, good evening - I bought my 07 TFSI vRS 4 weeks ago privately from a fella who had bought it from a dealer and paid for the service plan.

Whilst the car was (presumably) set up for variable servicing from new, the servicing according to the service plan puts it on to 10k intervals (or thereabouts, but I assume 10k). I picked up the car on the 25th Sept, the last inspection service was completed on 3rd August and the oil changed, apparently NOT using engine oil for variable servicing. Almost immediately after bringing the car home I checked the oil and was alarmed to see that the level of oil didn't appear to register on the dipstick at all (certainly not over the plastic bit at the end) and the litre of oil I added took it up to approx 1/2 of the level indicator and so I assume it would take another 1/2 litre to bring it up to max level - given the sump is around the 4 litre mark, this seemed to be missing quite a high proportion of oil and more alarmingly had appeared to have consumed quite a lot of oil in the 2000 miles since it had last been serviced.

My owner's manual seems to be for a facelift car - I assume the original was lost and the dealer chucked in a new manual out of an FL car - as such it recommends VW 504 or 502 (which I thought had been replaced with 504) spec oil. So I bought some 504 - now I've convinced myself I've done wrong and am on the verge of draining the lot out and starting again just to satisfy myself.

Should I be alarmed in anyway about the amount of oil it seems to have used? It's not dropping anyway and I can't see the results of any burned oil coming out of the exhaust in the form of smoke or vapour.

The one thing you don't know is what level the oil was at after the service? It may have been at the bottom of the dipstick, or even lower.

Keep your eye on the level over a month - If you think it could possibly have used 1/2 litre per month, you will soon notice any abnormal oil consumption.

Good point well made! Would it not be the case that the dealer would have drained all of the oil out of it and then filled to capacity (I want to say 3.8 litres)?

lesson here is check oil before sale!

FWIW my previous car (mk 5 golf gti, same engine as a tfsi vrs) always needed a top up between services. I ran that car from new up to 90k miles, so it was fully maintained, run-in properly etc so I don't think a bit of oil useage on that engine is anything to worry about.

My car uses oil erratically and has consumed between one and two litres between variable services (~17,500miles). Using VW 504.00/507.00 synthetic to top up. I bought a few litres of the Havoline stuff when Morrison's had a sale. I now always carry a litre bottle with me after the low level warning came on suddenly during a gentle motorway run. £20 a litre at Toddington was a jolt.I believe the consumption has now slowed at 38,000 miles.

My Passat PD got through the oil as well, but steadily over its 140,000miles with me.

Sorry for the diesel only tale!
