MP3 Players and Turbo talk.

Featured Replies

Im wanting to fit a generic mp3 device to my 04 Fabia VRs and seeing as the genuine item from the vag stable is now discontinued has anyone got any constructive advice for what type to go for?

My turbo also seems to be passing a bit of oil from a valve before entering the intake manifold. Is this a sign of it going and passing? Im a bus mechanic but cars evade me a bit.....

What head unit do you have? Do you have a disc changer?

Aye sorry - its got a 6 CD Changer which I dont use and havnt used since I got it so hence wanting to fit an mp3 unit. Its the standard symphony head unit.

Here is some advice given to me from another member.

It's directly pasted from another thread, I haven't researched it yet, but sounds like an route I'll take also.

YOu can hook up an Ipod to the headunit via aftermarket gubbins which replace the CD changer

VW sell an aftermarket ipod lead for mk4 Golf chassis, costs around £100

Alternatively you can get other brands that do the same thing, brands such as 'Connects2 or Dension Icelink Plus'

I've been using a Dension Icelink Plus since 2004/5, and it works just fine. Charges the ipod, and also you control the tracks and playlists using the headunit rather than touching the ipod.

I'm selling my Dension cable now, but it's only for a Gen1 Ipod Mini, so might not be any use to you?

With regards to hooking up Amps, it can be done, you need an adaptor made by Autoleads which makes it all plug and play.

But to be very honest, in my R32 (I have the same headunit) all I did was upgrade the front speakers to some Focal ones, and dynamatted the doors, and the sound was really very impressive. Didn't really need anything else, unless you really wanted a thumping SUB... The sound improvement was truely eye opening.

These Ipod leads plug directly into the back of the headunit, into the CD changer's mini ISO. This means you will completely loose the use of the CD changer..

YOu won't get track names on the headunit or dash, but you will get CD1,2,3,4,5 (indicating the playlists 1-5 on your ipod), and you also get track number and track play time.

With regards to Iphone4, You'll need to research the Connects2 or Dension website for full compatability.

Another brand is X-carlink I believe.

With regards to the Autoleads part number, sorry I do not know it, I'm sure it isn't too hard to find on their website. Just search for VW Gamma headunit (As that is much more common h/u, and has the same connections as the satnav)

I'm gonna try this

It's basically an elaborate FM Transmitter that will control my phone (music and calls) via bluetooth. It gets lots of good reviews so thought it was worth a punt before I disturb the original set-up, allowing me to keep the CD changer. The only cable required is power to this unit.

If it works I'm gonna hardwire it and mount to the dash

Search for Connects2 Aux input on eBay an you'll find what you are after.

The oil leak is probably the exhaust gas recirculation valve (EGR) which is easily fixed with a bypass plate which removes the valve completely and makes lots of things better.

Cheers all! Aye just been looking at the (EGR) Valve now. Good really as iv just noticed an M6 hex nut has worn in the manifold casting for the air intake trunking - nowt an M8 tap hasnt fixed :smirk: Just didnt want an expensive bill if the turbo was on its way out.

Connects 2 IMO.

1 is effectively an AUX-IN to the standard head unit. Track selection etc from the MP3 player or phone or ipod etc. - £30 ish.

The other emulates the CD player on USB sticks etc. Uses the original HU to control track selection. Tracks must be MP3 format and in folders CD1, CD2... Up to 90 tracks per folder. (Read that on the connects2 wbsite or in their PDFs). - £70
