cut out whilst driving

Featured Replies

Hi and thanks in advance for any replies.

I went out this morning car started up no problem. dropped the youngest off at school and started up with no issues, whilst I was driving along the car just cut out and would not start. oil ok and about a quarter of a tank in. the key turns and seems to want to fire up. no warning lights or em light lit up?

cheers

Phil

What colour was the exhaust? Mine did something similar once when I was giving it some stick up the road, it started to idle really roughly and had no power. I left it at the side of the road (in a gateway) for an hour and then it was fine when I walked back to it. I wondered if mine was a stuck injector, it has never done it again since. When it happened to me, I did found someone else on here who had the same problem - I think his had done it a few times, but he was able to tell when it was about to give up and thus get to somewhere safe(ish).

You need to get it scanned for error codes but could be the 109 relay or fuel cutoff solenoid. I take it that it turns over but won't start.

thats right mate. turns over like it does when the fuel filter has been changed just before the fuel reaches. only other thing i had noticed is it sometimes when pulling up the revs go to just over a k. not always and never when driving just when at lights now and again

Slight rev increase with no throttle = possibly burning a bit of oil?

My guess would be relay 109.

It's easy to exclude the fuel shutoff solenoid by loosening (not removing) one of the injector union nuts, wrapping a rag around the injector and trying to start the engine. If you get some diesel on the rag then the fuel shutoff is OK. Don't forget to tighten it up again!

You need air as well as fuel for the car to run. Check that the air scoop isn't blocked by a plastic bag. The scoop is at the top of the radiator - just follow the pipework back from the filter. The other cause of no air is a faulty butterfly valve in the EGR housing. Try moving the lever by hand while trying to start the engine.

It could also be a blown fuse, either in the fusebox at the end of the dash or on top of the battery.
