Check engine light

Featured Replies

Guys, can any of you suggest what might cause the check engine light to come on. My Mk 1 Octy VRS is still as fast as ever, MPG is fine, coils were replaced 1,000 miles ago, there is no misfire, all the gauges read normally but yet this morning whilst driving the check engine light came on and has stayed on. Of late when started from warm she idles a bit fast but this soon settles into the normal 800ish rpm idle range, there is no cutting out or anything of the like

If any of you know what might cause this please let me know.

many thanks

Lee.

Mine is the same mate ?? Weird :wonder:

Could be anything. My light came on when the temperature sender failed, but it didn't cause the car to drive differently at all. Didn't even notice it at first.

Lee, wherebaouts are you?

Lee, wherebaouts are you?

north of scotland - morayshire to be exact. you?

Ideally you need to vag-com it!

could be anything starting from a tank of low quality petrol...

vag-com it and post the results for more info on them

Guys

Just been to the local garage - he did a code read for me and it came back code '17704' cooling system malfunction. The temp gauge in the car was reading around the 90 regree mark which you would expect after a 30 mile run, the diagnostic reading on the code reader showed a temp reading of 68 degrees. i am therefore thinking that the temp sensor for the gauge in the car is fine but the one which tells the ecu the temp maybe faulty. Does this sound logical? if it is the ecu temp sensor which is at fault what is the typical cost of a new one? how long to fit it and how hard to fit and where on the engine is the sensor to be found.

any idea what part number is for the faulty sensor and whether i am best buying vag or after market

all info gratefully received

thanks

Lee.

CTS has 2 feeds: one for the gauge, one for the ecu. if you've got a black one (old revision), or an aftermarket one, it's very likely the ecu feed is malfunctioning. (happened to me ~3 months ago).

a new CTS will be somewhere between 20 and 30. ALWAYS BUY A GENUINE ONE, the aftermarket ones are crap.

many thanks for the info. the info provided seems to be of american origin. are the part nos the same for the senders sold by vag in the uk?

excellent guide. i will give it a go shortly once i have bought the sender.

thanks

Lee

part no's are identical

advice: let the car cool for 6h or more before you do the switch. this will guarantee absolutely no coolant loss.

otherwise don't worry if some coolant is spilled

And invest in a VAG COM cable and you can read/clear the fault codes yourself :)

thanks guys - you have been a great help. shame the same cannot be said of the skoda dealer in inverness. i waited for 45 mins for some prices on a temp sender & 3 'O' rings - apparently £28.60 and £1.03 each for 3 'O' rings. They could not find the part no for the Y pipr breather pipe so could not give me a price, front indicator was £24.27, i asked for the price for a vRS carpet mat - drivers side - i was quoted £20 for rubber ones, and finally i asked for a little round cap which i think sits atop the charcoal filter which he said was a pollen filter and quoted a price of £3.14.

All in all not a satisfactory experience. I much prefer to see the parts on the screen so i know that the parts dept are going to order the right thing.

In addition they did not have a single one of the above in stock. I wonder whether i might be better ordering off a skoda dealer from down the road and have them posted to me.

the part nos given were

TMBER41U628571193 - for the green temp sensor

no part no for - Y breather pipe

100953155D - Front indicator

863SKA136BLK - vRS carpet floor mat

BN2815645 - charcoal filter cap

do these sound right? as i say i did not have much faith

Ok mk 1 Octy front vrs floor mats are 1U2864496CJVM and 1U2864495CJVM as have just collected some from my dealer today. These are the original equipment carpet ones with silver border and vrs logo.

how much were they? and can you buy them as singles? my passenger side is perfect but the driver side worn through almost

And invest in a VAG COM cable and you can read/clear the fault codes yourself :)

clearing can be done even without any cable or software ;)

TMBER41U628571193 is your VIN, not a pn

green temp sensor --- 059-919-501A

Y breather pipe --- 06A-103-221-BH

100953155D - Front indicator --- guessing you meant the turn indicator - 1U0-953-155D (left) 1U0-953-156D (right)

863SKA136BLK - vRS carpet floor mat --- no idea...

BN2815645 - charcoal filter cap --- are you sure it's the charcoal filter cap ? post a pic or something

Yes you can get them as singles they are £25.33 each + VAT give me five minutes and I will check which part number is the drivers one.

Drivers side mat is 1U2 864 496 C JVM
