Brake Calipers

Afternoon All

I need to replace a couple of calipers on my car, I'm not looking for an uprated replacement, just the same as the originals.

What I'm unsure about is who to get them from.

I've seen a couple of the suppliers mentioned on here do what I assume are refurbs, and you get x amount off if you sent your old ones back. Are refurbs to be recommended?

I've also had a quote form Sere Motors, which from what I recall was about the best price I'd seen, but I don't know if they are new or refurbs, I'll have to email and find out.

I got a refurbed calliper from brakes international in Rochdale. Was very good service and they seemed to know there stuff. It was £78 for a rear off side calliper of which there was a £55 surcharge which is returned when you give them your old calliper. I think bodge has used these guys as well.

Try brakes international, or the brake part superstore.

I got a refurbed caliper for the rear of my vRS, and it looks immaculate, and virtually brand new. It was remanufactured by TRW, who now own Lucas, the company that made the caliper in the first place.

Thanks.

I've had a look on both, what I'm not sure about in both cases is the variations available for the rear claipers, seems there are different hand brake gaps - how do I know which I should have, are the codes (BCA2967-10930 for example) Skoda part codes?

Brakes International have got back to me and need to know the front disc size and the rear piston size?!

From TPS I know that the front calipers are 1K0615123D & 1K0615124D, and that that rear are 1J0615423B and 1J0615424B.

I also believe the front discs are 280mm - can anyone confirm that?

What I have no idea about is the rear piston size, anyone?

When you sat £94.29 + surcharge, is that £124.29, but you get £30 back (less postage)? Are those prices inc/ex VAT?

I've found a site, Buy Parts By, that comes out at:

Rear Left - £152 inc VAT and delivery (£9) with a £50 surcharge

Front Left - £135 inv VAT and delivery (£9) with a £50 surcharge

When I try Euro Car Parts with my reg, I get offered two possible rears and two possible fronts (rather confusing), none of which match the parts you listed (more confusing)...

Front Left - Part No: 133441751 £118.80 with a £30 surcharge (free delivery)

- Part No: 133441810 £131.94 with a £36 surcharge (free delivery)

Rear Left - Part No: 133441920 £171.60 with a £54 surcharge (free delivery)

- Part No: 133442810 £180.00 with a £54 surcharge (free delivery)

(All with out site discount)

Confused? I am.

Check and see if you have a branch near you, the website has a rubbish search on it and the branches have a more reliable system

There's not one here yet sadly.

Does anyone know if there is a company that buys up old calipers? Sere Motors prices for brand new are very good, so if I could find someone that woud pay for the old ones that would be a solution.

Tom

Not sure if you missed my post but TRW rear calipers brand new for £72.96 from: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/octaviabrakes.php

I needed a front as well a few weeks back and it was £102 new from VW, so why pay more.

Hi

I did indeed miss your post, sorry.

When you say needed painting, I assume that was you choice, it could have gone on as was, but you wanted it in green or similar?

I'm unsure of the prices you're quoting though, everywhere I've looked and the quotes from TPS/Skoda, the rear is always more expensive, you on the other hand seem to have experienced the complete opposite.

Hi Tom

Hope this helps.

L/H Rear: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1903

R/H Rear: http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=1904

Both the above are £60.80 + vat but are genuine brand new TRW calipers and are not on exchange.

Front ones are a little more tricky, I needed a L/H one but Skoda could not supply so I went to VW, part number V1J0615123D is £97.15 + vat they had loads available.

288mm and 312mm fron calipers are the same btw.

And all the above will be in bare metal so will need painting to match.

Arrgghhhhhhh!

Who would have thought the purchase of calipers could be so complicated!

I have just had an email from VW Spares, they are quoting a completely different item to you, they say it should be BHS184 & BHS185, and £57.50 + VAT (£69).

I'm also unsure what people mean by bare metal and needs painting. It's an old oil burner estate, so I'm not wanting red/green calipers, just as they were, boring standard calipers.

A glimmer of light!

While looking at VW Spares recommendation I noticed that the calipers you recommend are below.

You have a VRS, I have a 1.9 TDi Elegance Estate.

Thanks for the site though, they are indeed cheaper than anyone else I have seen, and are brand new.
