1.9 TDI overheating?

Featured Replies

Hi I'm new so please be gentle :)

I've had my 54 plate 1.9 TDI PD just a year now, I love it :D It's done 180k and in August had a service / MOT which included sorting out sticking back brakes and replacing cambelt at my request. In the last few weeks the temp gauge has started going up from its normal 90 'in the middle' point. I can do 30 - 40 miles from cold, before it starts going up, then after that it seems to go up into the red on uphill inclines, dropping back down to 90 on downhills, as long as I stick to about 50mph.

I'm guessing head gasket, but is there any other common cause for this, before I commmit to shelling out for the HG? When it's really hot in the red I sometimes stop and rest the engine, then it can be a bit 'coughy' on start-up.

ANy help much appreciated :)

PS I should add there is no coolant loss at all

Did it have a new water pump when you had the cambelt changed? Sounds like a failing/failed water pump to me, especially if it didn't have one at your recent service.

as with gac, if the water pump hasn't been changed in any of the 3 cambelt changes it may well have started to break up.

Thanks very much guys, that's really helpful, the water pump wasn't changed with the timing belt. Looks like that's my problem
