Starting to get a little disappointed

Featured Replies

Until last week my impressions of my Superb has been really good. There have been some slight issues like rattles from the interior, unbalanced wheels/front chassie etc. But last week when we went for a skiing trip the car was difficult to start. When it finally started it only was going on three cylinders. After getting a little warmer it ran as ususal again. This time it was -20 C. A few days later when it was time to head home it didn't start at all. I had to get a friend to jumpstart the car. This time it was -25 degrees C. The car is only a couple of months old so Im very surprised. I called Skoda after getting home again and they want to diagnose the car.

Then yesterday the left mirror started to fold out more than it should. I turns around 180 degrees and almost points forward. The only thing to prevent this is to stop it by force when its folding out. A friend of mine have had this happen as well but he hasnt been in for service yet.

I have also heard some "clonking" sounds from the front suspension when going over bumps in lower speeds. This has only occured 3-4 times but it doesn't feel any good.

Overall I´m very happy with the Superb but those problems are starting to throw a shadow over the positive things...

Regards the engine, -25 degrees puts huge strain on the battery and the drivetrain ( engine, gearbox, diffs ). I wouldn't be surprised if it was difficult to start, ESPECIALLY when's it's new, as the engine is still a bit tight. Regards the other things, just go to the dealer, they'll fix them

Is the car not fitted with an auxiliary heater?

If not then I'm not surprised. -25c is a tough temperature for cars to work in.

As for the mirror just sounds like a dodgy sensor and something they should fix in no time.

The "clonks" don't sounds good. I'm sure it will get sorted though.

No it hasn't got any auxiliary heater. I had a new BMW diesel a couple of years ago, also without auxiliary heater and I never had any problems starting in cold cold weather.

  • 2 weeks later...

-25c should not be a problem if your battery is charged and fine. I had one morning with -27 this winter when it almost didn't start, turned out to be that my passenger door had been open all night so that the interior light was on. Really shocked the battery wasn't flat.

How far do you drive on average each time? Since the cold drains the batteries quickly it could be that you aren't driving far enough between each trip.

I've also had issues with starting mine in the UK, on a cold morning it takes a while for the engine to turn over and start and then forever to warm up.

I do find this part of the superb to be very disappointing . I'm wondering I'd I should get mine looked at as some days I don't think it's going to start.

Your car is not OK. I have two months old car and even down to -35C (and a longer period of -20-25C) has been no problem whatsoever - starts very quickly and even gets warm after a while (w/o aux. heater).

Definitely go and let them check.

I might be preaching to the converted here......but you do know to wait for the glowplug light to go off before trying to start the car or if it is really cold turn the ignition off and back on again to get the fuel system warm

It sounds like you have some electrical problems that are draining the battery. That is why you needed a jump start. It could also be a bad battery.

I usually drive around 20-30 km each time. And when this problem occured my last trip was 700 km so the battery should be charged (if there wasnt any bad with it). And yes, I waited for the glowplug light to go off.

Since I wrote the older posts in this thread I have been to Skoda for diagnosis. The only fault codes they found was that the cable clips to the battery wasn´t properly screwed in. I still suspect that the problem was something else (bad battery maybe) but I havent had any problems after the skiiing trip. It´s much warmer at home...
