Does Anybody Know For Sure?

Is the microphone used for in-car telephone conversations the same one used for Voice Control of the Columbus?

My 58-plate Superb II 170CR Elegance allows me to use the telephone function fully. However, when I press the top right-hand button for voice control of the Columbus, although it "bongs" and awaits instruction, no matter what I try, it cannot hear me (unless it's just me and the voice is being a typical woman - only joking!).

The voice control options are correctly selected and activated. If I enter a new destination, then try to attach a voice tag that way, I get the "Voice tag too short or too quiet" error. If I scream at it, it records, but the result is about one second of static.

I'm on 2760 Firmware (I've retro-graded to an earlier version, but I've not tried 3810 yet). I've tried any number of re-boots and even reset to system defaults throughout (and lost all my saved navigation addresses in the process - grrrrr).

Bill2 came over today - thanks mate - and we compared settings, etc. on his admittedly-later Superb Estate (lovely car, BTW), but we couldn't make any impression on my problem at all. His voice control is working perfectly, likes being spoken to in a normal volume and tone of voice, reacting just as it should. We're both on the same Firmware and Map version - I just don't get it at all. If the microphone IS the same and is the only one fitted, at least that would point to a Columbus fault. Until I find out if there's only one microphone, I've no idea what to do next. I know it's not essential, or even necessary, but if it's there I want it to work. :)

Like Bill I've a shiney new Superb Estate Elegance and the voice control works perfectly. The documentation implies that there is only one microphone, aimed at both driver and front passenger. If I do not speak a command after activating the voice control the lady says 'Sorry' (or maybe it's 'Pardon') and after another pause for a command it disables voice control. The only time a voice command is not recognised is if the lady is speaking herself (obviously can't multi-task like a real woman!).

In the Octavia the Mic is first wired to the Columbus (mic in) and then from there (mic out) to the GSM module - it must be the same in the Superb

On a 58 plate I would guess that the orginal Columbus pre dates voice control (as it was on my 59 plate Scout), so the mic is wired directly to the GSM module only. You need to re-roue the mic to the Columbus and then add another screened wired from the Columbis to the GSM module - not do difficult to do.

Right - seems to be a hardware issue, then, which no amount of software tinkering will fix without re-routing the mic as described. At least I know now - much appreciated! :)

OK, I've got the parts and I'm ready to solder. The one thing I don't know is how to tell the polarity of the microphone connections in the central roof console. The plug in the back of the Columbus is easy, but I haven't seen such info for the roof mic - any ideas? :)

I couldn't find way either - once connected it will either work or not depending on if you've guessed correctly or not :giggle:

Update:

All working now after a small initial boob (thanks No Waiting for the quick response!).

For future ref - for any other techie fiddlers - use terminal 2 in both replacement plugs as the positive terminal. :)

Ray

well done ray.
