100w Main Beams

Featured Replies

Hi, ive done a search for a straight answer to my question with no hard 'evidence' so to speak. Hopefully this post can be of help for other members.

NO SQUARES ALLOWED! or the mention of the word Illegal.

Basically as the title says, im wanting to put some 100w high beams in my car as I live in the sticks but I want statements from members that use them (in their fabia not their morias minor 20 years ago) to post their problems/successes.

There are a few factors aswell.

  • The main reason, my new xenons I bought in the recent group buy. Im asuming the plastic used isnt of quality and not sure how it would react to an increase in heat, but I imagine xenons run hot aswell?

  • My main beams wont be on for hours and hours at a time, 15min or so

  • Can the wiring cope? Ive heard members say the wiring is fine but to clear up for other members

I would have thought 100w and plastic lenses would be a no no due to the heat.

Xenons are a gas discharge bulb so produce barely any heat (think how hot your tube lights get at work compared to a desk lamp)

If you had main beam xenons instead of 100w filament bulbs i think they would be as good as 100w main beams.

Got Philips 100w main beams in my xenons and they're fine.

Might use 80 watters, just to be on the safe side

Recently put some 100w main beam bulbs in mine and they're absolutely fine !

If you're using your main beams, you're probably driving at a speed that makes use of them. The airflow across the plastic will help cool it. And as you say they're never on all the time in most conditions.

Why not get Ring Xenon Max +120% bulbs instead?! They'll be as bright as 100w, brighter than 80w, while being cooler than standard 55w bulbs, and you'll have that smug feeling should BIB ever pull you over. Or how about a HID main beam kit?

i got 100w's

passed mot

dont even seem that much brighter tbh

Just get HID full beams mate?

I've got them on mine, and ran them on my polos for years.

Exact colour match, no excessive heat, they flash just fine (HIDs always flash full power first before reducing down and powering up), and you don't have to worry about blinding people, as their full beams

Ive asked Phil about them (HID xenon group buy) I just found out you can get H7r's which are designed for reflection headlights, which is cool

I think the H7r is just a standard H7 bulb with a bit of plastic on the button so it doesn't shine off the base of the reflector back up again. Doesn't really matter if it's dazzling though for main beam really, unlike dipped.

The fuse rating for the circuit would give you a guide as to the suitability of the wiring. A 60 watt bulb will take a continuous 5 amps, a 100 watt bulb will take 8.33 amps. Heat may be a deciding factor, on my car with glass headlamp lenses and plastic headlamp protectors, there's a noticeable dimple on the headlamp protectors that lines up perfectly with the centre of the standard headlamp bulb. I've seen a few cars where the plastic on the bulb plug has melted.
