Worrying rattle/knocking on braking

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Hoping someone can help. I had a trawl but couldn't find anything which directly relates to this very specific problem.

I am getting a knock/rattle when I brake which seems to be getting worse. It happens at all speeds usually when braking fairly steadily but more or less goes away if I stamp on them. I decribed it to my mechanic, as almost like when a pushbike wheel is buckled, when you brake it's sort of intermittent (like the ABS kicking in, though at nowhere near harsh enough braking or speeds). The rattle is stronger and more frequent at higher speeds. It comes through both the brake pedal and steering (though I noticed it initially only on the brake pedal, the steering now seems to pull a bit to the left, in time with the rattle on braking) and slows to a speed which feels like one revolution of the wheel, at lower speeds, all the way to stop. It happens with cluch dis-engaged or engaged but is more noticable when the clutch is down and on smoother roads, I think only due to reduction in engine noise.

My mechanic described it as pad rattle, but couldn't find a problem when I asked him to take a look. The car is regularly serviced, about every 6 months and pads are only 60% worn, according the mechanic. I first noticed it when I had new tyres fitted a couple of months ago. I do a lot of driving on winding A and B-roads and this is really annoing me. I'm worried it might be the wheel since I live in Sheffield, the city of a thousand pot holes but there is no obvious damage.

I just haven't got the time to spend looking at this at the moment, so if anyone knows what this could be, or a good Skoda mechanic in Sheffield I could take it to, that would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

Pete

Warped disk?

Had somthing similar on a Focus. Dodgy caliper kept warping the disks on one wheel. Went through 3 disks before the caliper was changed. All under warranty.

Have you had the drop links and bushes checked in that area?
