Help ABS fault

Featured Replies

Hello can anyone out there help me ???

I have a 55 plate Octavia II 1.9tdi Ambiente with approx 53000 miles on the clock. It all seemed to be going fine until recently. About a week ago while driving the Yellow ABS dash light and ASR light came on and remained illuminated, the ASR button below the radio was also illuminated and pressing this did nothing to affect the dash lights.

I booked it in to a local garage for a diagnostic and was informed that the OSR wheel bearing was gubbed and this would have damaged the OSR ABS sensor, I was advised to replace both bearings and sensors on the rear at the same time.

Parts purchased and I changed the bearings and sensors myself. Lights still on in the dash but I thought that they may require a diagnostic reset.

While driving to work later on the same day I was aware of a loud warning signal and the speedometer dropped immediately to zero and would not register, also the red brake warning light began to flash and the electric steering warning light came on yellow and remained on. I pulled In at the roadside and switched the car off and back on again to try and cancel this. As soon as I started driving the ABS and ASR lights came back on, about a mile down the road the warning sound flashing brake warning light and electric steering light came back on with no speedo working again. I parked my car at work and left it for several hours.

On finishing work I drove the car home, ABS and ASR lights remained on, after approx 1 mile the same fault as above happened with all the same warning lights and no speedo, I pulled on at the side of the road and turned the engine off and back on to reset lights and try and get the speedo working again as I need to negotiate average speed cameras on my way home, most lights went out with the exception of ABS and ASR and speedo was working again, within another mile warning sound and all lights came on again and this time the engine management light was on and remained on.

When driving with the ABS and ASR lights on there is no operational ABS, when the yellow steering light is on the steering is slightly heavier but apart from that the car appears to be running fine.

I'm struggling to understand why all of these faults would appear at the same time and I'm driving along looking at Blackpool illumination.

Any help with this would be brilliant.

In anticipation

Jonathan

The roadspeed is taken from the ABS sensor that is failing.

Eek, I would look for someone with VCDS to scan that and see what comes up.

Sorry for lack of knowledge, what is VCDS ???

Also regarding the above with the ABS sensor acting as the pick up for the speedo would this also bring on all the other warning lights ???

Thanks Jonathan

VCDS is Vag Com Diagnostic System which will scan the car for any fault codes logged by the ECU.

I believe the steering is speed sensitive these days so if it cannot determine the speed of the car this might explain the steering fault light. Not sure about the brake warning light but this is obviously somehow linked to the ABS fault.

Thanks very much Anddenton,

That would certainly make sense about the steering being linked to wheel speed as the warning light comes on as soon as the speedo dies. The red brake warning light flashing comes on when a fault is found with the ABS system so that would explain that. Just not sure why the EML is now on.

The other really annoying thing is that when I had the car in for a diagnostic last week the fault was showing at the OSR ABS sensor and when I removed the wheel bearing at this side it had collapsed and I could see where it was damaging the sensor.

Just really hoping that I'm not going to get news of a faulty ECU or ABS control unit.

Hello! while going down the motorway today my ABS and ASR light came on followed by the Yellow steering lamp. could this be a abs sensor fault? will get it put on computer asap.

just took mine for a good thrashing and steering light has gone off but abs and asr still on!!

I had abs esp and tyre pressure indicator on my mk2 vrs light up yellow, dealer diagnosed near side wheel bearing and ABS sensor price £391 i said ill think about it, 2 days later light went out but i can still hear the droning bearing but ill live with it till it gets worse

Was it the wheel bearing only or did you replace sensor too? Mine came with codes for the sensors but mechanic thinks it might be the bearings.

hello! i replaced the sensor too just to be sure. it wasnt expensive! but the bearing wasnt too cheap and im in the trade!
