eml coolant temp switch, signal to high

Featured Replies

its the second time vcds has picked this up coolant temp switch signal to high, just wondering what problems would this cause to the the engine while runing if any?

i noticed every so often the temp gauge never moves but when you turn ignition off then on it works fine.

It's a sign that the thermostat has broken up. Remove the sensor and have a look and feel and you'll robably find a broken thermostat. You can get a complete housing with sensor from Skoda, part number 047121111S, at around £45.

fook sake, just replaced the pads and disks and mrs was hoping to put the L's on.this wouldnt cause any runing problems right, just water wouldnt flow like it should

Best to get it sorted as the engine won't get to it's optimum temperature, so it'll likely use more fuel than it should. It's just another common Fabia fault.

Hallo,

I have just replaced the thermostat and its cover, and the coolant temp sensor. The car is an 1.4 mpi classic (thats the very basic one) 'W' regd.

Symptoms before replacement were poor idling at tickover, engine prone to cutting out just after startup, especially if reverse gear was engaged quickly. In my opinion it seemed as though the auto choke was not operating. Pressing the accelerator peddle only resulted in a further dipping of the revs (flatspot) followed by needless over-revving. Temp guage not working. Uneven tickover at normal temperature too.

Symptoms after replacement parts fitted, all of the above were the same, but now the temperature guage WORKS!!!

The thermostat had desintergrated, the new one was the cover with thermostat fitted into it, the cover is fixed by three 8mm head screws.

Any ideas what may be causing this poor idling, it's now getting so that pulling into traffic is a dangerous business as the engine almost dies, or you get ridiculous high revs to pull away. Bring back cable operated throttles :hi:

Cheers Mintgreen

Are you're dash and headlights pulsing by any chance and have you had any issues with power steering? Does the PAS pump seem to be constantly kicking in and out as though you were fractionally moving the wheel left and right even if it's parked with the engine at idle? I only ask as those were the symptoms I had before changing my angle sensor, if you can get the fault codes read (anyone locally have VCDS or could you buy a generic lead and download the demo?). The other options are your battery (bad earth or on it's way out), flat fuse in the engine bay on top of the battery cover or the alternator (unlikely to be the full unit, just the VRM). Either way get the codes read first.

Thanks Avalon for;

Thanks for that Avalon, yes the lights flicker and i have the simptoms you describe with power steering, it is intermittent with the warning lamp showing occasionally. The battery is fine, and the fuses and lead connections. I have asked a local Briskoda member to check the codes soon. The steering sensor has not been changed yet tho'! Just one thing, VRM? ( Voltage regulator m......?)

Voltage Regulation Module. I'd bet it's the angle sensor, it starts to fail, the ECU can't differentiate between no steering input and a fractional movement one way or the other so constantly kicks in/out, the reason the lights flicker is the 45amp drain from the PAS pump while it's constantly kicking in/out.

You should be able to hear it from the car but if not and you're parked try standing next to the p/s headlight, the pump is just behind the fog light. I was quoted two different prices by different dealers. Rainworth wanted £139ish delivered with a £42 rebate on return of the old unit (speak to Jonathan in parts) and my local dealer wanted slightly less but with no return on the old part so worked out more expensive. It's about 30 mins to fit if you have ramps, you could do it with two axle stands but as it's a upper torso under the car job don't attempt it with jacks, failing that it's going to be less than 30 mins labour for a mechanic with a lift.

there are 2 gaskets for this, will anyone of the two do?

http://www.eurocarpa...housings-gasket

I guess for the complete thermostat you dont need to buy the above gaskets?quick reply would be helpfull thanks

I would expect them to include the gasket but best to call ECP and ask, the last item I attempted to purchase from them clearly showed a ball joint included in the image but they told me it wasn't included with the wishbone. Also remember the 25% code for being a Freedom member :)
