How did these scratches get there?

Featured Replies

Quite peeved off after noticing paint peeling from the outer NS door sill. How on earth could that have happened? I could've sworn it wasn't there when I got the car and don't remember kerbing it or getting stuck on a big hump/trying to mount a pavement. (It's ten years old, so I expect swirls etc).

The door is fine....isn't the position too low for a car to have scraped it? It is on the side of the car that faces the street when I park it at home....

Can I just apply some wax over it to avoid any rust setting in and do the touch up process later when I've got more time?

Yes you can, the previous owner probably concealed it with colour magic or something

Grrr, FML! And colour magic is so poor it just washed off, I guess?

Chipex is pricey, but seems to be the best recommended stuff. Such a long process though.....clean, isopropyl, tape around, sand, paint, dry, light sand, rotary buffer........

You don't need to sand and buff chipex as far as I am aware.

Oh! That saves a few steps then.....will look into it. I assumed it was the same as those touch up paints in the little nail varnish pot.

Poor quality respray.

So will Chipex, if applied correctly, give the best bang-for-buck repair result....short of taking it to a detailer?

ah, previous owner was a dog owner I take it? there's more filler in those sills than there is metal I'd wager.... to get that to look nice again you will need to get that body properly by a body shop, they would scurf that back through the scratches then re paint it all fresh.

I bet if you look carefully in the door shut near the corner where the outer sill meets the door frame there will be area where the paint looks slightly blemished.

Not as far as I'm aware...and I certainly have no pets and none of the neighbours' cats have tried scampering into the car.

Is it the corner by the door hinge I should look at or the opposite one? The more filler than metal observation....is that based on the photos or generally in skodas of that era?

Many thanks!
