Gearbox oil?

Featured Replies

Hopefully someone can tell me the correct grade of gear oil for a 2010 1.6 CR Tdi Roomster. How much oil would also be nice to know. Thanks BB

Edit- forgot to say manual.

I posed the same question some time ago in regard to my 1.9tdi scout.

After a lot of searching the internet and putting registration in ,all I can find is

1. Millers oils quote EP75/80 GL5 CODE 6014 mineral oil

2 German Swedish French spares quote CARLUBE EP75/90 SYNTH

Most sites just say refer to owners manual.

If there,s a gearbox oil expert out there , perhaps they can tell us if the grade makes a difference.

VW quoted grades are usually on high side, ie if VW states 75W90 then 75W90 will be too thick.

I used to go for VW fluids only, until they started charging really silly money (not he usual 2x price, but more like 5x-10x price).

Then I discovered Fuchs oils, and these work just fine at 3x-4x lower price.

I'll have a look what spec is needed for Roomster g/box, need to do that anyway as intend to check g/box oil level around skid plate job. Most likely it'll be 75W80, as that's what the fill for earlier 6-spd box was.

I just checked the different oils for gearbox, and if it was me I would go with VW fluid, G052 512 A2, you need 2x 1l bottles as the fill is 1.9l, and it should cost you under 15 quid for the 2 bottles.

But if you really want a different fluid, Fuchs TITAN SINTOFLUID FE SAE 75W meets the spec, but is already more expensive than VW juice.

If you want other fluids, GL-4 specification, 75W thickness and VW TL 525 12 approval are what you are looking for, do not use GL5 unless the bottle says GL4 compatible, as many GL5 oils corrode brass syncros. For last minute top-up on weekend when dealership is closed, you can go to Halfords and get fully synthetic Castrol SMX-S 75W85 GL3/GL4, at GBP12/ 1l bottle.

Edit: the reason why I'd stick with VW fluid is because viscosity makes tremendous difference in shifting feel. 10W difference is difference between silky smooth shifts and slipping syncros. I had a good practice on my Octavia, I swapped 5spd for 6spd, and played with 4-5 fluids over its life, in the end I went back to VW stock fluid, then to Fuchs (different spec) when I started using Fuchs in the Superb.
