Adjusting shift weight?

Featured Replies

Is there any way to adjust the shift feel and weight on the Octavia VRS Mk1?

I`ve been impressed with how precise the gear change is on this car, but at times it feels too tight to me. I had a Cliosport 172 Cup before and even though the shift didn`t feel as precise on that it was alot looser and easier to quick shift. The Octavia feels quite tight sometimes and 'clicky'. I`ve actually shifted a couple of times from 1st to 2nd whilst booting it and crunched the bloody tranny because I expect it to shift straight in without too much force. lol

Maybe there is something wrong with mine, i don`t know.

You can fit a different weighted bit on the gearshifter (the part shown in the photo below with the part number on it) Forge do a smaller one that reduces the throw on the changes:

Its probable that your gear cables need to be adjusted

In general though, the mk.4 gearshift is thought to be slack, with a long throw.

The gear selector lever that chicken_eyebrow links to can be replaced with one which reduces the side-to-side movement, plus as mentioned forge and compbrake do similar which reduce both side-to-side and front-to-back.

There are also B&M and ebay copies of replacement gear levelers which reduce throw even more, and add much more precision to the gearchange.

ive got a hpa short shift on mine makes a huge diff to the feel of the shift, mines set at 40% reduction of thow over standard setup :)

I`m very tempted. Might try the weight change first from forge before going all out with a new shifter(unless someone thinks that is the best option for me?).

I know these boxes are VW reliability, but can they cope ok with a shorter quicker shift upgrade?? I know sometimes it can increase wear on the synchros.

Cheers all,

Samuel

Just been looking at this on ebay as I`m a bit tight on cash at the moment. Would this achieve pretty much the same result as the forge one? It looks about the same and its nearly half the price.. Not sure whether it offers the 40% reduction in shift though that Forge state?
