Palm GPS - quick and easy install

Featured Replies

I have just installed this without dangly bits (i.e. the connection cables, not me). Nothing difficult - no hacking about. All I needed was a ciggy lighter extension (about 8ft required). I used an old power cable and soldered on a ciggy plug and socket from Maplin for 99p each.

The net result is in picture 1. The GPS (Bluetooth) is under the parking ticket clip and the Palm is on a swan neck from the windscreen. The two power cables disappear behind the fuse box cover.

The only other visible cables are picture 2 and 3. The 12v/usb adapter is plugged into the end of the ciggy lighter cable and the whole lot stuffed into the can cooler drawer in picture 4.

The fuse box cover was removed in picture 5 and the cables were put underneath, near the front away from the clips.

This is a neat arrangement that will do me nicely for the moment. My next plan is to bung it all in the fuse box. There is a recess above the fuses which you can just see in picture 5. The adapter just fits in here, but without the ciggy lighter cable socket. I intend to cobble together a connection on it and solder a wire to a spare switched fuse (the downstream end of course). Then, I will try to find a way behind the air vents in the centre of the dash and put the GPS here, out of sight. I here the satellite reception is still good under here.

I intend to cobble together a connection on it and solder a wire to a spare switched fuse (the downstream end of course).

I have just done this now. I soldered a wire onto the downstream side of the fuse for the seat heaters (hardly used). This is a switched supply off the ignition. It needed a hot iron and a quick blob of solder on the top of the fuse. The tinned cable was then quicky soldered. The plastic doesn't like getting too hot.

There was a handy torx screw towards the top left of the fusebox cutout that served as an earth. I twisted the cables around the end and side connections of the ciggy lighter / usb adapter and then bound with insulating tape. The usb cable is quite long but it tucks away in a hole at the front of the fusebox cutout. The adapter itself sits snugly in the recess.

So now the fitting is neat and tidy, and out of site. My ciggy lighter socket is free for other uses. I have attached a picture.

I also looked behind the dash on the left, corresponding to the fusebox on LHD cars. There is a bit of space to tuck something away here as well. I don't know what yet, but it may give people some ideas.
