Fixing ideas for exhaust heat shield

Featured Replies

The heat shield attached to the body, above the resonator, has come loose and is making a good old rattle. 3 out of the 4 fixings have corroded away, allowing the shield to sit on the resonator.

Anyone got any ideas or experience on what to use to fix it back up?

The fixings sticking out of the body are sheet metal screws, so ideally I'm after some speed fasteners to push over them. Like these:

But I'm impatient and want to fix it now! Plus I'm not sure how easy it's going to be sourcing speed fasteners locally.

Ideas on things to use and where to get them at short notice would be great.

Cheers guys

Motor factors or b and q maybe

Wood autos in wakefield probably do them if you're down there ever?

Yeah I think I'll just have to get hunting over lunch. Problem is I'm pretty new to the area so I haven't found any little engineering suppliers or auto factors yet. The B&Q website didn't turn anything up. I just want the rattle gone asap!

I've moved away from Huddersfield and Cummins Turbo Technologies, working for Prodrive now mate. So Wakey's a bit far! The best engineering supplier I ever found was Danlett, on St. Andrew's Road in Huddersfield. I always used to get all my stainless nuts and bolts and hose clips there. I'm sure they have speed fasteners too!

Just thought maybe someone's used something else instead.

I'm up at Shark at the end of the week, so don't want my car sounding like a bag of spanners when it's on the RR!!

After discovering what VW call the fasteners (Clamping Washers), I just rang Skoda and they knew exactly what I meant.

Unluckily they used up their last ones this morning, but by the time I rang they had already ordered another load in. So picking them up in the morning.

These are the chaps: http://www.ecstuning.com/ES356582/

Sorted!

4 of them cost me £1.76 from Skoda (P/N: V441 863 987 B )

Bit of a pain to fit without jacking the car up, as you have to bend the tangs back on the shield that retain them. Then boff them on using a big deep socket as they are so tight. Anyway they're all knocked home tight now and the shield is as good as new. No more rattles, for now.........

Good stuff. I'll have to get some of them when mine starts rattling. I know there's a couple missing down there.

Presumably you went to the skoda dealer between Banbury and Oxford, but did you know there is a stealth vw/skoda garage in Banbury? It's somewhere round near Morrisons. They used to be a vw dealership until the sold up and bit retirement flats on the site and they moved to the industrial estate.

Yeah that's where I went. Not easy to find them is it!

Listers VW/Skoda on Tramway Industrial Estate. They only do servicing and parts, which is good enough for me. It is weird though, having a dealership garage that doesn't sell cars!

Been there a few times now and happy with the service, so maybe it's better having a dedicated service centre...

They used to be Spirit VW and were next door to the Three Pidgeons pub near the fire station. They sold the site for redevelopment and for a while I think they were supposed to be opening a new place by the motorway junction but it never happened.

I fitted mine around the side of the house, literally next to the bin.

Saved a lot of hassle lol

I just had mine welded back on for £12. Bargain!

I was sat next to a guy on a flight from Chicago not long ago, a guy from Indianapolis who was going to Cummins for a few weeks in Hudd as he worked for the company. Quite an interesting guy but cant remember his name,
