Mk1 vRS not running 100%

Recommended Posts

Hi,

My mk1 vRS is not quite running right.

Over the winter just gone it was really temperamental as cold start, and felt like it was going to stall. This would happen as I'd pull away, but also about two minutes later.

The garage where I get my car work done (VAG specialist) couldn't see anything wrong apart from the Aux Air Pump.

I had the rivets sheared, and fastened back together, but it was hard to tell if this had fixed it or not as the weather began to turn warmer as the work was done.

I've now noticed the car still feels a little "reluctant" after a few minutes of driving, there is a bit of a hesitation when I accelerate (I'm not talking about gunning it!), but it comes and goes and always seems to be just a couple of minutes after a start.

Is this common, or does anyone have any suggestions as to what it could be?

If anyone can suggest a fix that would be much appreciated.

Cheers,

G

Do you let the secondary air pump do it's thing or pull away straight away?

Strictly speaking you need to sit and wait 90 seconds for the secondary air system to finish warming up the exhaust. If you pull away before then the variable valve timing is still engaged and the car will jerk quite a bit.

Other problems could be coolant temperature sensor, or a dirty throttle body. Have you fault code scanned it?

I have to come off the drive so I'd say it's over 90 secs by the time I've started it, and got it on the road.

I'm not a mechanic so don't have any fault codes.

I'm assuming the VAG specialist I go to has and found nothing.
