how to remove tar?

Featured Replies

I have alot of tar bumps and spots on the lower half of the bumpers. I tried researching online but there's too much conflicting opinion on how to get rid of them. One place will say to use X chemical, while another will say that X chemical damages the paint, etc.

Not keen on doing anything to inadvertently ruin it.

Advice please?

WD-40 works for me, either that or Meths. I'm sure others will have their own tips.

I've posted about this elsewhere but I've found a product called 'sticky stuff remover' & it's commonly available at craft/diy outlets. It's a spray gel application & seems to work a treat on a whole range of stuff with no harm whatsoever to paintwork. In your case might be worth a try ;)

Autosmart Tardis

Best product Ive used for dissolving tar

Yea Autosmart Tardis is a great product, just dilute it to what is required,

Personally I just clay paintwork

thanks everyone for your advice. will try it

If you live in Scandinavia, I'd search up Prickbort. Excellent for tar and tarmac!

But be careful how you google that, you might get something you don't expect

I got that ;)

WD40 or a small amount of petrol will do. Olive Oil as well, but nowadays I would not tell which is more expensive between Olive and Crude Oil :giggle:

And, no matter what you use, let it work for some minutes before polish it away.

Autoglym intensive tar remover is good stuff.

I wouldn't recommend polishing any degreasing product away. Tar will seriously scratch or swirl your paint if you use any sort of fabric to remove residue. Just let the product work for a few minutes (see directions on your product, but most petrol-based degreasers should not dry fully on the paint), flip out your power washer or hose it off. If you don't care for your paint much, disregard this post ;)

Yes, you are tendentially right, but I have been using - for years - a soft cloth or sponge for polishing away those products and until now no damage. Of course, everything carefully and delicately. I would say that the best thing to do is washing the interested parts with car shampoo and water after the product has had the desired effect.

And, I must add, I do not use petrol-based products on plastics, unless they have a very mild formulation.

Swirls caused by dragging dirt and tar around after degreasing may be difficult to see in plain sight, but in direct sunlight or with a LED-light you will spot them pretty easily:

It's very easy to obtain swirls in your paint (allthough maybe not as serious as these), and usually they are caused by dragging dirt around with cloths, sponges etc.

I'd do a search on degreasing on sites like www.detailingworld.co.uk for great ways to do this, along with tips for the right products to use :)
