Noisy tapping / tappets

Featured Replies

Hi

I recently bought a 2004 reg Fabia. It was sold to me on the basis that it had a ticking sound which was said to be tappets.

I had a look around the net and the suggested solution seemed to be give the engine a flush and have the oil changed.

I had the car fully serviced (non Skoda garage) and he said the car was still making a noise but he expected it to goaway over time.

Problem is, it hasn't - if anything its worse.

Its like a ticking sound that seems to appear when you accelerate.

Any thoughts? I have to go to a main dealer soo nto pick up a part I ordered so may ask them for an opinion. Is it expensive to fit new tappets - which seems like another possible solution.

Car is an automatic if it makes a difference.

Cheers

What engine is it?

1.4 Petrol - Auto gearbox. 2004 reg

I think that narrows it down to just one engine?

I should add, the ticking soudn is there from start but it seems to get noisier when you accelerate.

Is it definitely the engine? Does it get louder with engine revs or just speed?

Phil

my vrs (blt) does the same. sometimes it you can hear it, other times its gone. very strange. mine always seems to be when i getting low on fuel? be nice to hear comments on this?

I would say there is more of a correlation with engine revs than speed.

It doesnt get worse with faster speed of say over 40mph

but at the lwoer speeds it certainly seems to react with push the accelerator down.

Check the exhaust manifould for cracks, the sound wont be so noticeable when ticking over, but when harshly revving, or hard accelerating it will be at its worst. That would be my assumption. could be hairline cracks or small hole. if there is a heat shield take it off and have a close inspection.

Well seeing as you mentioned it, I had my car serviced the other week and the emchanic mentioned the exhaust was rusty and would need fixing in a few months (i.e 6 months) - he said that it might get noisier.

The tappy noise itself I guess is caused elsewhere in the car and may be amplified by the exhaust.

I get this too sometimes, but has disappeared the last few months haven't heard it in an age

Sounds like the tappets or lifters to me, or a worm camshaft. Had the same problem with a rover i had.

Is there enough oil in the engine? And whats the service history like?

Full history on mine and always the right oil used

Car recently serviced and regularly serviced before that

Going to the dealers next week to pick up a part so wil lsee if they can give me an opinion.
