Brake Fluid Change

Featured Replies

Any Tips on this.

I've got 2 bottles of VAG 501.14 brake fluid and an eezibleed.

Will 2L be enough fluid or will I need more?

Is there a specific order to bleed in and also what tools are needed to bleed the fluid?

I'm curious as to what size spanner I'll need to undo the bleed nipples.

Also do I just bleed the brakes, or the brakes and the clutch or the brakes, the clutch and then the master cylinder?

Thanks

1 liter should do. Even in the A6 1 liter was enough.

Start with the longest brake line and than proceed to the shorter ones.

Keep the ignition on (ABS pump)

Keep an eye on the level when bleeding, you dont want to have air in the lines.

Bleed nipples are mostly either opened with a 6-7mm or 8-9mm spanner.

Brakes and clutch are separate systems. Just bleeding the brakes should do.

Best to do it with someone to help (and who knows how to bleed), so you can check the fluid running out (color).

I'm assuming dirty fluid is a lot browner in colour than clean fluid and that you're waiting until there are no air bubbles in the fluid coming out?

If I'd been able to find it the the ATE blue would have been a good fluid for the first go, as I guess it's obvious.

In terms of the clutch, since it runs of the same reservoir is it worth doing, or is it a pain and best left alone if there are no issues?

Old fluid is always dirtier than the newer. Just wait until the clearer fluid comes out.

It is very easy to see.

Never done a clutch bleed, so I dont know.

I would leave it, when there are no problems.

Sounds sensible to me :)

I'll have a go in a couple of weeks when I'm next down with the trolly jack/stands.
