Screeching noises

Featured Replies

Right, another addition to my issues that have all emerged the last couple of weeks:

1. flood in boot

2. broken spring

3. stuck pinch bolt

4. torched upper arm boot (oxyacetylene action!)

Now I also have a screeching sound when moving at low speed with a steering input, not necessarily full lock, even a half lock.

It is very high pitched.

I am not sure, as it was raining today, but even when going in a straight line I can perhaps hear hydraulic noises, but not sure, could be just water hitting the fenders, or something like that. But it reminded me of my old Citroen Xantia as that permanently sounded like that.

Have checked the fluid level and it's just over max mark when warm.

The car has 102k miles and as far as I know the alternator pulley has never been changed - in case someone thinks it might be that - could it be? I think the mileage is too low for a power steering system failure??

Screeching sounds like belts at least same as the alternator. Check them both.

Observe the behaviour of the aux belt tensioner when you apply lock (car stationary). If it starts to oscillate, check the freewheel clutch in the alternator pulley.

Done the checks as suggested. All good. Turned out to be a bent front disc shield just touching the disc!

The garage must have bent it when they were removing the pinch bolt last week.
