can it be done ?

Featured Replies

hi there guys as you know i have had issues with my 1.6 aee so now i think its time to give up on it

what i want to know is if the mk3 golf vr6 will fit in as been offered the whole car at a good price but its rotten with good engine and box

has anyone done this before is there anything i should be aware of ?

Im not sure so dont quote me, but i believe the mk4 golf would drop in, but maybe not the 3. Someone else would have a better idea, i just know the mk4 is usually template for the octy I

Any engines can be done but its all about cost

And sticking a heavy vr6 wouldnt be my choice of conversion !!!

6 cylinders FTW!

Get it done end of!

The v5 and v6 4motion are both mk4's so it can't be that hard?

I always dreamt about slapping a twin turbo'd R32 lump in my old one :)

That would make a interesting conversion, carn't think it would be to hard to do and make a change from the 20vt lumps

They're not that heavy, to be honest. And make the best noise!

ok so its about cost but if i had the whole car surly it would be all there for the change over i am more woried about wiring issues than anything else as all the rest is is time and effort

It'll be subframe mounting points, engine mounts... anything is possible if you can weld, though :)

i have a mate who is a bit handy with a welder lol so not too much of an issue :)

I was led to believe the mk.4 retains the mk.3 engine mount locations

Was under the impression it was the same going the other way, eg TFSI and FSI engine all retain same mounting points

Don't personally think the VR6 wouldn't be the best engine, but not a bad engine either.

Definately be different, very interesting, bit retro, and a feck site better than a 1.6

Do some research into how mk.2 and mk.1 owners have done VR6 conversions and replicate

try the edition 38 forum mate,or try some of the tuners in pvw like the phirm,j-tech automotive, unit 18.they could all do it or point you in the right direction if you want to have a go yourself.

VR6 lump would be epic! It would be loads different from the same old 1.8T with the same mods. Sounds like god too!

I wonder if the shell has the mounting holes for the VR6 already, as the engine is used in the golf MK4?

Am sure they mount in same place on inner wings

might need mk4 v6 mounts as spacing might be slightly differant but having complete doner car will help

Just reminded me, yes it is!

USA got a 12v VR6 Golf - so it should just bolt in :D

ok guys well its in for its annual health check lol and the lads there are going to let me know if its time to rip it out or plod on and work away ?

but on the plus side it looks like i am going to buy the vr6 anyway :giggle: its just a question of mk1 cab or the octavia ? tbh i think its the octavia as its more strait forward and making it a sleeper is going to be fun but like i say it will be a matter of mot pass / fail whether its now or in a few weeks lol

must say a big thank you to you all as you helped me make my mind up

It will not fit on mk3 mounts, they bolt to the subframe on a mk3, you will need the mounts from a 4mo or R32

Ok so your saying that with 4 mo or r32 mounts it all systems go ?

Like I said if it fails tomoz I'm going forward with the conversion but if it passes it will be done over time so I can make it work without rushing it to keep it on the road

Yeah, as wayned says - might be an idea to get the Mk4 VR6 GTI mounts specifically, as I'm not sure the difference between the 12v and the 24v VR6's, mount-wise.

Blackforest Industries in America did a swap to a Mk1 in 18 hours: http://blackforestindustries.com/blog/2011/09/21/18-hour-swap-mk1-vr6/
