S3 intercooler upgrade on TSI Octy, any advice?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Thinking about what i may need if I went to stage 2 with the car, some have done S3 intercooler mod.

From what info I have gleamed from the internet, i need the following:

S3 Intercooler - 1K0 145 803P - £214+vat

Left Pressure Hose - 1K0 145 834 AA - £23+vat

Right Connection Hose - 1K0 145 832 L - £48+vat

Plus 10 x M6 Hex Metal Screws with washers to replace the original plastic ones

Are the gains worth it and could it be done DIY?

Cheers

Ron

I would love to give you some advice on this, but I havent done it on my car yet Im afraid, waiting for my tamed technician to become free again!

Ive just managed to get my hands on an S3 intercooler and gonna be fitting it to my 2.0 TSI soon enough and just been doing a little digging on fitting. I have found that the existing hoses can be used as long as you cut the metal connector off the drivers side hose (dont cut the hose you cut the metal with a dremmel or hacksaw and then the second inner metal part will pull out leaving you to just use a jubilee clip to connect), but wondering if there any instructions at hand for replacing without removing the front panel? Cheers for any help

my tech just removed the front panel, as it was too hard to get it in/out leaving it in, we used the hoses that came with the intercooler, they were very tight, but went on eventually, Im not sure if they were S3 or regular hoses though. BTW, you wont need another map to go with it, your ECU will adjust accordingly.

Ok mate cheers for the info. Have you or has anyone changed the flatter outlet pipe coming off the turbo to the intercooler (drivers side behind the arch liner and usually called the pan pipe) before the rubber one that connects to the intercooler as its restrictive (know it was terrible on the 1.8 20vt)?

Heres the link but thinking of buying universal silicone and aluminium pipes and doing a DIY as the route is simple enough and dont need the fancy clip connectors as would be jubilee clips (is at turbo and intercooler (if your cutting the metal connector off the standard pipe) anyway).

Just nipped out and had a look and tell a lie it is one of those fancy push fit connectors from the turbo to the pan pipe.

Had a search on google and can get the intercooler hose set for about £40, but have to order 10 pieces. Heres the link but doubt we will get 10 people, but worth the ask! Im trying to work out where the smallest pipe with the metal connector goes, but im sure it connects to the small metal turbo outlet (the one bolted to the turbo and had the clip connector which the pan pipe connects to.

If this is the case and wanted to get rid of the the restrictive pan pipe, then would simply be a matter of getting a 2.5 or 3 inch (will have to measure the standard hoses but sure its 2.5 inch) universal aluminium pipe (which this chinese company supply) with a 135 degree and would do the job nicely. Looking about £50 delivered which is a bargain when you consider the usual costs and the standard rubber s3 pipes will be over double that alone. Can even have Briskoda stamped on the pipes for free lol :)

hmmm, I need to get under and see what conncetions Ive got, tbh, I dont think the universal pipe idea will work well, the point of the upgraded parts is that they are curved to aid the air flow, a straight pipe wouldnt be as effective. Ive seen it mentioned that the AWE pipe tends to leak, apparently the Neuspeed one here:http://www.neuspeed.com/480271-hi-flo-turbo-discharge-conversion-tsi.html is better!

cheers for the info and the neuspeed pipe is a nice looking bit of kit. The universal pipe i am talking about would be exactly the same shape as the neuspeed one so would have no flow issues, and the only difference would be that it will be a standard jubilee clip fitting where it meets the silicone pipe to go to the intercooler instead of the push fitting that the standard and neuspeed ones have. The only thing it wouldnt have would be the bracket to secure it to the side of the engine block, but thats easily sorted by either cutting the mount off the standard plastic pipe and attaching it to the aluminium pipe (know how to do it in my head but hard to explain) or plenty of other options to mount it.

Well finally got everything delivered and ready to fit (could really have done with them on the 1/4 mile at inters on Sunday with 30 degrees :(). I have a full set of silicone hoses with fittings along with the 2 aluminium pipes to replace the  2 restrictive plastic crap pancake pipes. Hoping no probs with the S3 intercooler and be a day down the garage sorting it.

What aluminium pipes did you get dainott? and what hose fittings? interested to see how you get on, I still havent fitted mine!

Hi mate only just seen this post. I ended up up getting them off a seller on ebay and paid £140 ish for both delivered with all connectors so happy enough with that. Quality is excellent tbh and hoping to getting around to fitting them this week but have a lawn to prep and lay so doubt im gonna have much spare time this week and gonna be fitting the s3 cooler at the same time which aint gonna be a 5 minute job.

oooh, pretty! which kit is that, you have a link?

The red Silcone set was separate mate and got it for about £50 in auction on ebay. Below is the nearest i can find.

The solid pipes are both from this seller:

Make sure you ask for a deal on both pipes as postage for them is quite expensive so will give you a cracking deal on both together. Aim to get them both for £135 delivered.
