air-con problem (Octavia RS 2010)

Featured Replies

As I was parking the car the other day I thought I was hearing added engine noises but I could not see anything and all the warning lights were OK so I continued driving the next day but I noticed that the air con was no longer cooling the interior. The fans were blowing but bringing in almost warm air. I checked the fusebox but that was OK. The car has leather seats and its a nigh mare driving if it gets even a little bit warm outside. I brought the car to the dealership and asked them if they would come out and have a quick look at it (i.e. to determine if it was compressor, leakage or something third) but they almost laughed at me and told me that I would have to book-in the car and that the chances were that it could be the coolant [in my view, the coolant does not go instantly] or the compressor. Bringing it in on Tuesday

The car came with 2 year warranty which has expired in January. How would you go trying to get a deal if the compressor has gone. I cannot afford a new one and my understanding is that it costs some 700 Euro!

Any advice hugely appreciated

It will be the compressor, go to a specialist independent in England it is £500 fitted, you might get some goodwill from your dealer and Skoda , mine is in on Tuesday for it I got goodwill from both and I will pay 445 and mine is a 96 model, it depends how helpful your dealers are, which country, best of luck, but make sure you know what they are going to charge to diagnose

I am based in Ireland. bringing the car in tomorrow for 'assessment'. Had the car in Fast Fit on saturday and they have a fancy Bosch machine which serves to top up coolant and measure pressure. The guy was able to tell me that the colant was spot on and not a gram had leaked since car was bought but they did not have the technical experitsie to comment on the compressor.

The dealership where the car is booked in tomorrow was the one I bought the car in 2010 and it has been regularly serviced by them so I am hoping it will not be a rip-off.

If the price it exorbitant, i will bring it to an independent garage to get the job done. If it is a compressor issues, all I have to say that it is a pitty and ashame that something goes 6 months after the warranty expires-as if though I am driving a punto and not a car made by VW group!

The compressor clutch fails on them, an independent diagnosed mine over the phone, ( vag-com showed it was spinning,it has to as the drive belt spins it , the sensors working,) he said if no leaks and coolant in it is the clutch, once a blue moon the evap valve gets blocked

Should this not be covered under the 3 year manufacturer warranty if the car is a 2010

IIRC, the warranty is only 2 years in Ireland

And they pay a lot more, better spec though

Is it the same with all manufactures or just vag group

OK, just to update you. Brought the car to dealer (Autostation, S'ford) and was called by them on the phone some 2 hours later. The lady said that everything was OK with the coolant and the system did not need any 're-gassing' but that the ac compressor had gone and needed replacement. Since the car is 6 months out of warrant, they have put in a request that I do not pay anything. Therefore, the new compressor and the labour will be free off charge. The part has been ordered and they will call me in the next few days to get it fitted. I was somewhat pessimistic that something like this could happen in recessionary times but it did. I do not know was I simply lucky or as it the case of these compressors giving huge problems and they just decided to rectify the problem. Either way, well done to Autostation and I will be a customer of theirs again in the future

Glad you got it sorted only fair they will pay, mine is in at the moment for the same thing, mine nearly 6 years old and got contribution from both dealer and skoda making it cheaper than an independent, and fitted cheaper than the part alone
