skoda fabia 1.4 16v tapping noise when idling

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

Brought my fabia back in feb im really pleased with it. It makes a tapping noise when idling from cold but goes away when engine is warm. the car as had a recent service carried out by me sparks, oil filter, oil, etc, and just had cam belt water pump auxiliary belt done by a audi volks and skoda specialist. the car as done 75,000 miles and holds full service history . the sound still remains after having the work carried out. the other day ive noticed the sound is louder than usual since i had no choice but to drive on a flooded road . the car was fine it didnt cut out.

can anyone shed any light on this issue for me and is there anything i should look at

Thanks in advance

Twista

Did you use the correct grade oil? Is the level correct?

Could be a hydraulic tappet issue.

well i was advised by a local motor factor to use 10 40w semi but i just checked with euro car parts they say 5 40w fully, i guess i was advised wrong first time as im using 10 40w semi so this could be the issue what would be the best plan of action now

Thanks

This is encouraging, I've just picked up the parts for a friend to service my car - EuroCarParts' website offered me 5W30 fully, 10W40 semi or 5W40 fully - I phoned my local Skoda dealer and they said 10W40 in the 1.4 16v (mine is a 2003) - should I go and get it replaced with a different grade? The oil I have is Valvoline (supposedly VW grade 501.01 but it's a nightmare!).

Looking at various other threads on this forum, I think I'm going to go back to Euro Car Parts and change mine to Castrol Edge 5W30 - it seems to be the preferred choice around here. My car has sounded almost more diesel-like (and has been more hesitant and slightly less fuel efficient) since it's last service, I'm wondering if they filled it with 10W40 and it had 5W30 before - it'll be interesting to see, as nobody else can think of a reason for it (almost everything was changed on the last service as it was the 60k).

If the oil gives the improved fuel economy everyone mentions the £10 extra should pay for itself....

let me know how you get on andrew as i would like to resolve this and thanks for the info mate

I willdo - should be fitting everything on Tuesday evening so I'll take it for a bit of a drive afterwards and see what it's like. (sadly being stuck between graduating and starting my new job means money is rather restricting my mileage!)

For reference I'm basing my decision on this post/thread http://www.briskoda....l/#entry2841993

I broke down on the a50 this morning going to work lost power epc and traction control light come on then engine cut. Rac came out to find that the cambelt had been slipping : ( but i had the cam belts and water pump done a month ago by psi tuning a vag specialist. so there something they've done to cause this or a failed tensioner or water pump, im not happy at the moment about it but the car is back in there hands and im waiting to hear the verdict. lets hope they dont try and talk there way out of it.389113_4144733257807_1109347654_n.jpg

Ouch! Really sorry to hear that, I hope they take on the cost or at least it isn't that much. That looks like quite a weird fit to me, although I'm far from an expert. I have to say, for the cost of it the cambelt is the scariest thing I've had done to my car - £340 last year :S (I'm still not entirely sure if they did the pump but they'd better have done...)

I will get my mate to have a look at it if possible and see what he thinks. Let me know what they say about yours - I hope that it's alright and hasn't done any extra damage.

Ouch.

Keep us posted.

I would imagine that unless something in the engine itself has gone wrong to cause this then they are liable to repair it. If something had jammed in the engine you would probably find that it would strip the teath anyway and not cause the belt to do that. Perhaps the tensioner has gone/not fitted correctly?

does any one know if the 14. 16v aub engine use a variator chain at all?

Just an update

Psi Tuning got back to me its was a case of the tensioner bolt snapping so i guess a poorly manufactured part. Damage caused bent valves cracked head etc. Psi are now replacing part under warrenty and they said i should hopefully get my fabby back tomoz after. A quick turn around i think and cant fault there honesty aswell

Ouch, that sounds painful! It's good that they've taken it on warranty and great that they're sorting it so quickly :) I hope that it comes back working nice and cleanly for you!

Amazing the trouble a faulty part can cause eh?!

Not my video, but I found this and my car sounds much the same at idle so perhaps it is more normal than I thought?

Yeah never expected that to be the problem well at least i got a full to end rebuild for the price of a cambelt kit change. Andrew still keep me posted about your oil change over tomoz im still interested if it makes any difference.

lol i was egar to have the cambelt done to stop later issues but it still happened lol just my luck

Fair play- just something that's always bugged me personally! Indeed on the whole you've got a pretty good deal! I will certainly let you know if the oil change makes a difference...

Somewhat ironic really. Considering how important it is to keep the cambelt healthy that it should cause such a big problem so quickly!

just looked at the video it sounds like mine before the ticking sound came along so i guess it suppose to sound like a diesel but then again still interesting to see a oil change to 5w 30 to see if it smooths out abit, if you can take a vid with 5w 30 in and compare

well i only done just over a 1000 mile on new tensioners and belts you just wouldn't expect it

Well I suppose that's something good to know in a way. Indeed, I'm interested to see whether it will make a difference but also somewhat nervous that it will be alright - although I suppose it does at least claim to be a compatible grade :p

I totally messed up when buying it though- forgot to apply the discount grade to the second reservation from Euro Car Parts so ended up having to pay £17 extra when the difference between retail prices is only £10 - how silly of me :(. Mind you the guy that served me this morning seemed to be in a definite Monday morning mood, if it were the guy I spoke to on Saturday he probably would have sorted it...hey ho...

Indeed so! Quite surprised that the tensioner should go at 1000...

sounds like your having as much luck as me lol. If you dont try you will never know. the diesel sound as been floating around my head since i brought the car (should it sound like that or is there something wrong) may be we are listening to hard and expect something to go wrong) only petrol car i know what sounds like a diesel.

Haha, all in the course of car ownership eh :p I suppose so - I'm sure someone must have tried it before but indeed you never know. I agree with the sound though- it's been like it since I got it and I think the same - just seems a weird noise for a petrol to make, but as yet (touch wood) it seems to just be a weird quirk of the engine - it sounds perfectly normal when it's being revved.

Sounds like a dodgy part to me.

I imagine they will claim against the parts supplier or manufacturer for that one.

At least they have been very honest and getting it sorted out for you.

The ticking noises seems a very common issue on all these 1.4 16v engines and is said to be a "characteristic" of the engine.

Yeah thats what they said they where claiming against the company. Just wondering i've lost 2 days at work would i be in my right to claim any lost money against the skoda specialist or try to reason not sure what to do in this si****ion any suggestions would help greatly.

I wouldn't say that was unreasonable.

Were you offered a courtesy car at all?

They might try and suggest that you could have got to work with alternative transport etc. Is car the only way you can get to work?
