Replacement Key - Dealer or Auto Locksmith?

Featured Replies

I need a second key for my car. Best dealer quote I can find is £166 and Auto Locksmith is £145 (or £95, key and transponder only). The dealer told me that using an Auto Locksmith means the missing key will still operate the car, with them the car's transponder is reprogrammed so only the new key and key I have will work. Does that sound right? If so, it sounds to me like the extra £20 at the dealer is worth it.

Advice would be most welcome.

Thanks.

I'm in the same boat, dealer I bought I bought the car from said he would post the second key out to me, numerous phone calls and a month later and I'm still waiting
:wall:
, so I'm thinking about pricing one up and sending him the invoice!

I believe its £110 at Timpsons. They will cut one for £14 but not program it.

I have the buttons that unlock the car but not the key and apparently the key part contains the chip for the immobilizer. Pain in the ass!

Recently went through the same with my car.

I didn't have my SKC code to program the key.

What I bought from ebay was:

Second hand remote of the correct type for my car

New case for key with blank blade

New immobiliser chip (program once only job)

Seat badge for key

Got the blade cut, programmed the immo. chip after retrieving my SKC from the dash using vag-tacho and job was a good-un.

Total cost was around £50.
