Those pesky window regulators again

Sunday the wife announced her driver's door window had stopped working, she has an early 04 Octavia 1.9 TDI.

After A look on here I suspected the regulator had failed,, as you can hear the motor OK, just no movement.

Last night I took the door panel off, again using info from this board, and sure enough I found a broken cable, bottom left.

A couple of questions for someone who has changed this - do I remove the controller before I take the regulator and motor out?

As the glass is stuck in the 'up' position, how do I unclip the glass from the regulator when I cant get at the clips?

How hard is it to get the regulator in and out through the hole in the door?

Are the pattern ones OK, the OEM ones are much more expensive - I was quoted £96?

Any advice before I order later today would be appreciated, thanks.
