steering heavy after rack change *SOLVED*

Featured Replies

Ive spent most of the afternoon fitting my fully polybushed front end inc quick rack. After the struggle on my own in the back street i filled the power steering res up and bleed lock-lock, topping up as needed. When i dropped the car down the steering felt nice and light. I then set off to move it back round the front and steering had gone very heavy, As if there is no power steering at all :-( If i rev the car on the spot it seems to go lighter? Has anyone got any ideas? Please help i cant drive my car as it is. Thanks in advance

Did you put the right fluid in?

One of my friends had the same problem ,it was quite few years ago....

As I remember you must make sone settings with VAG COM and you're done

it will feel heavy as cars with quick racks use a different pumps so to get it to feel lighter you need the 100bar pump not the 90 on the octy ;-)

but most like the heavy steering gives really good feel when driving hard

I got the fluid from vag dealer. The green stuff. I dont mind the steering being a bit heavier but im struggling to make it turn at all :-( its really heavy. Ill look into the vagcom thing see if i can change settings.

Hows yer tracking? Mine was unbearable heavy when I got mine, the shocks were collapsed, and the tracking was miles out. You could well have upset it quite badly... Just a thought.

Although the different ratio steer rack will undoubtedly make it a bit heavier.

its the pump. clive was too fast

not on the mk 1octy mate. the fabia sposed to have steering weight settings but doesnt seem to work on mine lol.

octavia is how it is.

needs the 100bar pump as said.

I have a r32 rack on mine and standard pump, it is abit heavier but i actually quiet like it

I was expecting it to be a bit heavier than the std rack. Havent had the tracking done yet, dont know if it would be safe to drive it to the garage! If the tracking was miles out could it cause these issues?

If tyres arn't squeeling it will be fine, can track a car by eye to a certain degree

Just refitted old steering rack and problem still there :-( im gutted. Surely the pump must have give up? There is nothing else it can be. So now ive just spent another 3hrs and now ive got no quick rack and same prob, falling out with my car fast lol

if it aint broke dont fix lol.

you havnt kinked a pipe have ya?

dont see why it would all of a sudden stop unless you just put fluid in the tank and then ran engine? rather than working fluid in by steering first then running it up?

Are you sure you have bled fluid right through the racks? When I changed mine I had to go lock to lock for a while and it got heavier before it got lighter. Did you actually test drive car and attempt to turn it. The fact you have std rack heavy now may well be because you have air in system.

the air would be pushed out when yoy start the car. your pump might of squeeked for a sec while the air is passed thru and the fluid would be full of small bubbles. just leave to stand over night and check level again.

i have a feeling you might of buggered the pump? did you steer lock to lock first before starting the car?

is not the steering pump....don't rush changing it!

Just for info, I drove to work (5 miles) with no fluid at all when my rack exploded, pump was fine after re-fitting and filling up

Just ordered recon pump :-( Cant see what else it can be. Pully is moving on pump but maybe damaged inside? When bleeding the system the pump didnt make any noise at all, even at full lock? Got to be the pump, wont know what to do if its not.

Sounds to me you had a weak pump and the extra strain from the new rack killed it. Could be totally wrong but that's what I think lol

Exactly wat im thinkin, or hoping! Lol i bled from lock-lock loads of times. Turning the wheel when ign off its no diff with engine running. I guess it should go lighter when engine running when putting pressure on steering wheel
