Skoda Yeti 1.2 up steep hills...

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm thinking of getting a Yeti 1.2 2WD petrol - can anybody tell me what it's like going up steep hills (living in the Yorkshire Pennines there are a lot of them about!)

I've currently got a Honda HRV 4WD 3DR 1.6 Vtec. Comparing what they're like on paper they seem similar in power and capability?

I'm not technically minded, so please explain any technical jargon.

Any comments welcome.

Thanks

The 1.2 copes with the Pennines well, I have driven many miles on them. If moving it would pulled fine in 4th. Handling is great due to the light front end.

HOWEVER, the 1.2 even fitted with winter tyres is not that good in snow, due to the light front end and you may be stuck starting on one of the hills in this kind of conditions.

The 1.2 is a great engine and has more than enough power for me wether urban driving, country driving or motorways etc. But,I drive solo 95% of the time so cannot comment on driving abilities with say,a couple of passengers and their luggage.

I have a 1.2 Tsi with the DSG gearbox. Driven in West Country - Cornwall, Devon etc - on holiday so boot laden, up and down steep hills with no problems whatsoever. With the DSG box you hardly notice which gear you are in but at no time did the car feel like it was labouring or running out of power. The coast road from Padstow to Newquay is a real test and I didn't notice anything - which, I guess, is the best recommendation!

Who is going to be the first with a 1.2 across Hardknott or Bwlch-yr-Groes?

I have the 1.2 with the manual 6 speed gearbox and have to say the engine never ceases to amaze me. Having been used to cars with at least 1600cc engines I was fearing the 1.2 would be underpowered........ not on your life, the engine pulls like a train even with 5 adults on board and punches way above it's weight. You may find you have to drop a couple of extra gears on really steep hills but it has never failed to deliver. For a combination of performance and economy this is a hard package to beat.

Drove my dads 1.2 yeti in the lakes last year up some very steep hills. I found it needed to be revved quite high before changing gear, otherwise you get some serious turbo lag.
