Octavia 2010 onwards FL Day Runners on/off

Featured Replies

Hello All

not sure if this has been posted before, but i thought id share in case,

I love my DRL's on all the time, but there is a way to turn them on and off

Ignition on

pull and hold indicator stalk to activate full beam

while still holding on full beam pull stalk downwards (to indicate left) untill you hear the Chime

your DRL's should now of switched off

do the same above but push up to indicate right to turn them back on again (should hear another chime)

Took me a couple of goes, but i did double check the process on my car before i posted this!

hope this may be of interest!

Regards

yeah i can turn mine off via maxidot but i prefer them on. good info for others that dont have maxidot

All DRL's can currently be switched off (if you so desire). Any cars requiring type-approval since the beginning of 2012 will have DRL's fitted and it will not be possible to switch them off.

So vehicles such as the Rapid & Octy 3 you'll have them on all the time.

Personally I like them.

If you have VCDS go can also set them to dim all the time, or set them at full brightness with the headlights on as well (looks better with xenon) not sure why you'd want to but you can.

@ xpower - where in VCDS can you enable it so that they dont dim ?

You can't. your options are

1. LEDs at full brightness with tail lights on

2. LEDs at full brightness with headlights on (called PRL) permament running lights and tail lights on

3. Use a relay to override the dimming, works fine but throws a warning light on the dash

4. Leave them as they came as std :-)

Tried to switch mine on, they won't.

I presume this only works if you have factory drls (either LEDs or bulbs) as std

Do you have 2 seperate bulbs in the fog light housing area? if not then you haven't, although you can enable "fog lights as DRL's" in VCDS.

Yes, 2 seperate bulbs in fog light housing.

Ok, do you have a maxidot display? you can turn them on / off from there.

If not looks like you will need someone with VCDS to activate them if the above procedure didn't work for you.

I'm surprised as you have dedicated DRL bulbs they weren't turned on from the factory?

Thanks, no maxidot, looks like a VCDS.

My new octy elegance has the drl's in the fog light clusters - and wasnt working. No option in the maxidot to enable them and the procedure with the stalks didnt work either

went into dealer and he has 'activated' them for me . They now come straight on when key in ignition and to start position, use your light switch to for dipped etc etc and they go out. Option has now appeared in the maxidot mfd menu lights and vision to be able to turn them on/off if i want

They are far too bright at night time and should be dimmed, really they should be off altogether at night as DRL means DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS .

They do

Please lets not turn this thread into another when/why/where lighting thread.

The dimming is the important part. I cringe when anybody asks "Know how to stop them dimming" - howver they are usually the ****s already blinding me on the road and not as if I can do anything about it, at least if I'm not dazzling them as well we should avoid any kind of collision.

There are far too many people on the road with absolutely no consideration for fellow drivers - make the old blood boil.

I would be really interested to know if they can be dimmed to zero or nearly zero. It doesn't affect my current car but might affect my choice of a replacement. A software disable is preferable to a removal of the DRLs themselves as I guess this would lead to permanent faults. I accept that this is contrary to most peoples' opinions but is one of the reasons I bought VCDS (although I've yet to do any more than check for any faults on the famly's cars).

An answer to this in respect of the Octavia might suggest whether a disable is allowed on other VAG cars. There's hope for me as I know some VAG cars allow them to be disabled when the "Auto" light function is turned off - a small price to pay as the auto function is only really useful just before dusk.

The led drls on the octavia vRS can be coded to the following:

1. full brightness as drls, dim on side lights

2. Dim on drls, dim on side lights

3. Off as drls, dim on side lights.

I presume the non LED drls are the same.

Thanks. I can cope with Option 3.

Go into 09 - Cent. Elect. and then into coding you can see below in byte 24 where to change the brightness, they are set to 92% as std

(the below screen shot is from a TT, (which has been changed to 30% brightness) so the byte may be slightly different on an Octavia)

To turn the DRL's on and off with the light switch and maxidot method will only work if the car's control module has been coded with the DRL's activated.

This needs a dealer or someone with VCDS.
