Emergency Service - Before Holiday?

Featured Replies

Evening all.

A sudden change of circumstances means that we have decided to take our Octavia on holiday for 10 days next week to Europe. This will include covering about 4,000 miles.

The car is currently at 44,500 miles. I thought the service was due at 50,000 miles but looking at the records it is actually due at 45,000 (fixed servicing). What is the best course of action? I'm not sure any Skoda dealer will be able to service the car in such short notice - we leave on Tuesday. Is there anything I can do at home as an interim?

What'd you say is the best course of action?

...Given we're going via Cz, could always have car serviced in the home land...

Do an Oil and Filter change yourself & get the service done on your return if you dont do your own work.

or

ask a Skoda or independent garage if they can service it Friday, Saturday or Monday.

If you do not ask them then how would you know.

Have a nice trip.

Oil and filter is basically all they do on a service anyway so unless you want a stamp in your book, do it yourself.

To be honest money is a bit tight at the moment anyway what with the holiday so I would rather do it myself. I figure if I keep the receipts for an oil and filter change with mileage written on and then have it serviced at 50k, it shouldn't look too odd in the book? Not looking to sell for another 2 years minimum anyway by which point we'll be closer to 100k - if not beyond!

FSH doesn't mean a lot nowadays. I would rather see a book full of independent stamps rather than dealer ones anyway as i wouldn't trust a dealer to service a car correctly anyway.

The problem is though that tomorrow is occupied having the Octavia tracking sorted and two new tyres fitted to the Rapid. I then have to clean the Rapid as its I'm off to a car show over the weekend. Returning to Wales on Sunday night before driving to Hartlepool on Monday, staying there overnight and catching a ferry on the Tues evening. I wonder if I could get it done on Monday morning...

If you can't get it serviced before Tuesday and don't want to service it yourself then check all of the obvious stuff yourself (oil level, brake fluid level, coolant, lights, tyres, wipers etc.) and just have it serviced as normal when you get back.

Phone an indy or the local dealer. Explain the circumstances and ask if they can fit you in.

I'm sure someone will fit you in.

Then you have the time to so all the other things on your list. Maximises your time to benefit you even if its cost you £100.

Local garage is going to do it on Monday afternoon. Should I ask them to stamp the book? Can I ask them to put a certain type of oil in?

They should stamp/sign the book for you. This would still stand as being a full service history and if the car did have warranty it would still be adequate for the purpose of that as long as the garage is VAT registered.

They will use oil that conforms to the VW 505 01 (might be different now can't remember) but they should put specific oil in for you if you prefer and pay the extra cost of it.

Always a nightmare when you realise last minute that something needs doing before you go away. I need to sort out my leaky tandem pump out before our trip to Germany in 2 weeks.

Why shouldn't they stamp the book? Why shouldn't they use the oil you ask for? Are you asking them to do it for free? Your vehicle, your money.

Btw as I was riding down the "new" A46 past Lincoln, the Skoda dealer had a couple of signs up - fixed price service - £69. The was another offer I was "making good progress" on the bike I didn't catch it.

Enjoy your break, and there are lots of places to get cars serviced over there too. Was a Skoda place just outside the ferry port, first proper off towards the university, as I "debarqued" at Boulogne until it closed down and now use Dunkerque haven't been that way for a while.

I'm new to this area so not familiar with local independent garages but I like the one I am going to. They're always busy too which has to be a good thing?

So assuming the oil and filter is changed now, will that be it good for another 10k? Hopefully the next 10k won't come round as soon as this one has!!

Thanks for the help guys, I'll take photos and share. Amongst the places to be visited is Mlada Boselav so I shall get a picture of the car outside the museum!
