Engine Warning Light

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I know this is something that pops up from time to time, but to save me trawling through the various archives, I just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar, regular, problems?

I have 2001 Octavia 2.0 Petrol with app.45K miles on the clock.

At around 15K the engine warning light came on, the local dealer ran a diagnostic and changed the lambda probe (possibly probes?).

At 28K the engine warning light came on, the local dealer ran a diagnostic and changed the temperature sender.

At 31K the engine warning light came on, the local dealer ran a diagnostic and changed two lambda probes.

At 44K the engine warning light has come on and the car is going to a different dealer for a diagnostic later this morning.

In each case the car appeared to be running without any real problem, although on this latest occasion I experienced some mis-firing before the engine warning light came on.

I'd heard that it was common to have the temperature sensor "retire" at around 30K, so wasn't altogether surprised when mine did just that.

I fully expect to be told this morning that I need to have the lambda probes changed - again! Frankly I'm getting a bit hacked off with this as it seems to be following something of a pattern (change the lambda probes at approx. 15K). I'll confirm this later when the car comes back from the dealer.

Does anyone else have a history like this?

Yes it is common on the 2.0, does the engine use oil?

Could be air mass meter related, if they overfuel the probes get clogged up.

Lummox:

Yes it does seem to use quite a lot of oil, or at least rather more than I'd expected. Always need to top up at least once between services.

Well it's confirmed. Just back from the dealership who have run the diagnostic and identified a lambda probe problem.

I'm a bit hacked off now to say the least: if this is a common problem on the Octavia 2.0 Ltr (as Lummox indicates), why oh why hasn

Having read your thread a few days ago, this weekend my engine warning light came on and I took it into the garage this morning only to be told that one of the lambda probes is faulty! What a surprise! I have a 2002 2litre Octy too! And also... surprise surprise, I'm just short of 30k on the clock too. Fortunately I'm just within my warranty and so its going to cost me nothing but its a bit annoying as in 15k miles I strongly suspect that I may be experiencing the same thing again if your experience is anything to go by! Grrrr

I also have the some problems .2001 2.0l octy with 116,000 on the clock. The car as got new lambra probes , cooling sensor , air meter , but doesnt drink oil. Can anyone help .thanks

Replacing the lambda probes is fine, but really you need to look into why they are going wrong. Usually it is heavy oil consupmtion on the 2.0 caused by worn piston rings (believe Skoda have modified ones now). The burning oil contaminates the lambda probe and stops it working.

Also its quite common on 2.0 Octavias that do short journeys or get pottered around in and just seem to choke themselves up.
