Strange turbo noise 1.9tdi 105

Featured Replies

Hi all

My 2006 octavia 1.9tdi 4x4 is making some strange noises and i'm not sure if they're normal or not, any advice from anyone else would be appreciated.

I've had a few diesel cars before (astra tdi, vectra cdti, audi a4 pd130) and i expect the turbo to 'whoosh' when its boosting.

My octavia does this and sounds 'normal' around town below 2500rpm. However when accelerating at about 2500rpm the turbo starts making a cha-cha-cha 'ticking/flapping' noise (almost like the noise helicopter blades make when spinning) on top of the expected whoosh noise.

Any ideas what this could be?

It doesnt do it if i rev the car on the driveway, the turbo sounds normal then. It only seems to be when the engines under load e.g accelerating from 45mph in 5th gear.

I had a look around the engine bay today but i coldnt see the turbo from above so i couldnt really inspect the pipes for splits/leaks. Because it's 4x4 its got a pretty heavy metal undertray which is a pain to remove/replace so i'd like to get a few ideas before i start trying to get access.

Hopefully someone will tell me they all do it and its normal!

Thanks everyone

Well from my experience I can tell you that it is not normal. I have 2007 1.9 PD 105 as well (though not 4 wheel drive) and the last time my turbo did that, it sucked in a lot of oil from the engine and shut down. Needed a new turbo. Mine also did that only when I was driving - wouldn't do that while standing still. Also when it did that the car would feel underpowered as if something was holding it back. If yours also feels the same then its time to open that undertray.

Thanks for your reply, my car still seems to drive well without holding back and still good mpg. I'll have to check the oil this morning too, it normally hardly uses any at all.

If yours needed a new turbo then it sounds like its internal so i probably wont be able to see anything even if i do start taking the undertray off and having a poke around.

Sounds like its time to take it a garage
