Octavia major oil leak please help

Featured Replies

Hello all please can somebody give me some advise

I broke the sump on my 1.9 tdi Octavia and got a complete cowboy to fit a new one, it appears he didnt locate all the bolts whilst removing the old one and just forced it off breaking the oil seal that was attached to it. I now have oil flowing from the bottom of my engine please can somebody tell me what this seal is called, how much they cost and what sort of money it will cost me in labour.

Any help greatly appritiated as i know very little about mechanics and dont want to be stung again

Thanks very much

He probably missed the bolts at the gearbox end. The seal for the oil pan is formed with a bead of silicon.

Where exactly is the oil coming from?

a *thin* beed of sealant.... too much can block the oil pickup....

What a numpty, I hope he didnt damage any threads going into the block.

thanks for quick replys,

when ive taken the new sump off there is a bit of plastic attached to the gearbox end that has snapped off from above, it looks like two bolts have been left in and the old sump has just been forced off causing the thing to break. Oil running out between gearbox and sump casings....luckly threads seem ok in block.

From what i can work out i think it might be the crankshaft oil seal does that sound right? It looks hard to get to so guessing its going to be an expensive repair??

Thanks in advance for any advise

Can you take a photo of it? If the guy has damaged it then take it back to him and say fix it unless it wasn't a proper garage of course. It may well be a gearbox out job by the sounds of it.

Kneecap 'im...

Probably snapped the housing for the rear crankshaft oil seal. There was a guy on the TT forum did the same thing with his whilst replacing the oil pick up pipe.

The bad news is that you need to take the gearbox out to replace it :(

+1

I wouldn't take it back to the cowboy who damaged the oil pan. If he didn't know how to get the oil pan off, I wouldn't trust him to replace the sealing flange. The seal and holder is about £60, but it's not really a DIY job.
