Wheel / tyre sizes

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I've recently bought a 1.4tsi FL octavia which is currently running on 15" alloys with 205/60/15 tyres.

I have some winter tyres in the garage from my previous car which are 195/60/15 which I'm thinking of using on the octavia this winter, I'd like to buy a set of used wheels to fit them to but am unsure whether to go for:

a) steel wheels - seem to come fitted with 195/65/15's, would I be ok fitting my tyres to these? Can't see the small difference in sidewall depth causing a problem unless i'm mistaken, or

B) are there any mk2 octavia alloys that would fit my 195/60/15's?

Also would I need different wheel nuts if I were to swap to steel wheels for the winter?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Firstly, the tyres will fit the steels no problem. They'll pretty much fit any 15" octavia wheels... As long as you don't go for any crazy widths and your PCD is right.

You would be changing the rolling radius by almost 2% but this is within the recommended tolerance (2.5%). You'll find your speedo will overread slightly, but otherwise you should be golden.

Wheel nuts will be fine.

How about shodding your 15" alloys with your winter tyres and putting the money for the steels towards some nicer looking 16s or 17s? Just sayin' ;-)

Hi, thanks for the reply, that's good to know, at least I don't have to try and flog the winter tyres I have on ebay now.

I had contemplated larger alloys but decided I'd rather not have the hassle/possible extra expense of having to declare modifications to the insurance company as I switch companies most years (I know I'll need to tell them about the winter tyres but most don't charge extra) plus I'd prefer the ride comfort of the smaller wheels, this is the new family wagon so looks/handling are lower down on the priority list. Appreciate the suggestion though!

Thanks
