Gearbox Bang !

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have an '05 Octavia and while travelling uphill slightly today about 30mph accelerating there was a HUGE bang but the car continued to drive and change gear properly including proper feeling on clutch.... but when I stopped after a a few 100 yards I was leaking gearbox oil and had left a trail of oil up the road.

Any idea what could have happened?

Im feeling very sad as love the car

Thanks

Adrian

rivet sheared off diff smashiing through the casing is prob whats happend !!!!

new box wil be required if this is the case !!!

where are you located ??

Could be it has spat a diff rivet through the casing, but really need to look rather than guess. Are you sure oil is gear oil?. What model do you have - TDi, VRS, etc?.

Damn that was quick

Amazed at the quick replies.... its a TDI and its gearbox oil...lost a lot and the engine oil is darker and still right level on the stick...this oil smells different and not blackened.... it was a hell of a bang for a rivet ! how big are these rivets !

Its not the size of the rivet so much as the fact that when it breaks, it is fired through the casing with great force from the rotating speed of the diff ring.

so this is probably new gearbox time? Im even more depressed now.....but thanks for the heads up.... I just couldnt understand why these was such a bang/loss of oil but the car still drives !

You could see if someone has a modified one for sale that has the rivets swopped out for nuts and bolts in the for sale section, you never know, you might get lucky.

Ive done this before :o

Have i got to get the gearbox CODE off the gearbox? or is there any other way of tracing it down online from Reg or chassis number?

Edited by ado2807

What TDi is it?, 90,110.130?. 5 or 6 seed?. May be able to check from that, but best way is code off the box itself.

  • Author

Its a TDi 90 - last of the old shape on an '05

Is that the ALH engine?, best simple way is to look at inside front page of service book if you have it, should list the engine and gearbox code on a sticker there.

Yes ALH engline on V5 but no service book to check

Elsawin lists possible options as EBJ - 02JJ, EGR - 02JJ and JDM - 02JJ. You should be able to confirm which from gearbox casing markings in daylight.

Hope it helps

Just had a thought, I think there is also a sticker with the vehicle details stuck to the rear panel in the spare wheel well area, perhaps someone else can confirm this for you?.

Found the sticker underneath the carpet in the boot ! Thanks Phil, solved all my problems... all I need to do now is find an EGR gearbox from a 12k car for £50.00 on ebay? Well I always look on the bright side !

Look a flypast of flying elephants  - seriously though, good luck with your search, Clive at cntuning might be able to source one for you, worth a pm to him, nothing to lose but a lot to gain. Clive is a legemd on here.

I need an EGR gearbox..... does anyone know if any other codes are compatible?....and also.... the car drives but no oil in the gearbox..... how far can I drive this car now? 10ft? or 200 miles? Thanks

Not far at all, feet really. At the moment you have a unit failure that is serious, if you drive it enough for components to heat up and break up, then the failure will become catastropic, with bits of gearbox possibly doing a better job of escaping through the casing than the rivet has.

I know you could say gearbox is already fubar so what?, but the escaping parts may then take out other parts of the car that at the moment are undamaged.

Whereabouts are you located?, as may be able to contact a few friends to see if they have a box if you live in the right areas.

In answer to your other question about other boxes, I am not sure, but presumably it is just interim ratio changes, but one of the diesel lads may be along soon to answer that with greater certainty.
