bio diesel

Featured Replies

Hi guys will my 1.9 Tdi Fabia run on bio diesel 50/50 mix with ordinary diesel ? there's an out let close by that sells both 50% and 100% pure bio diesel

Hmmmmm, bio-diesel, the most disgusting thing ever devised.

Personally i wouldn't advise this approach (stands by to be flamed). Your handbook will say to use diesel fuel compliant with BS EN 590. At present, and i can't entirely remember, but 590 only permits a maximum of either 7 or 10% bio component.

There are issues associated with high levels of bio diesel especially when they get wet in that there is a higher chance of micro biological contamination (i.e. bugs) proliferating. In the worst cases you can accumulate a large enough bio mat to start blocking filters.

Solvency and material compatability are both also an issue, and you could remove existing deposits within the fuel system and/or degrade the materials used to construct it (seals, hoses etc.) These can lead to expensive repair bills.

Low temperature properties can also be seriously degraded, and whilst not an issue at this time of year as the temperature starts to drop it is possible the fuel will freeze (this is more of a mid winter issue).

There will be others who will tell you it is perfectly fine to do this having run there cars on cooking oil and used chip fat, and they are probably right, but you will need to consider vehicle longevity and sensitivity of the engine to its new diet.

If you do decide to do this please ensure the bio diesel is fully certified to EN 14214, this being the correct specification for the fuel. If not, walk away as it will probably contain a large proportion of Glycerol and other incomplete reaction products which wont do your car a lot of good.

As Jerry is really saying, you cannot run high bio fuel in your Fab 1.9pd TDI without extensive mods. It's ok at the levels already in standard pump diesel but anymore and you will block filters and probably damage fuel system seals etc etc. It does warn you about this in your owners manual.
