Hi guys I pray somebody has a answer to what I feel could be a major problem to my Mk1 Vrs...... I was pulling up to a set of light and as you do when slowing down use the gears also, so went from 4th to 2nd with clutch down ready to stop but doing so in a gentle roll. At about 5mph the car came to a sudden stop as tho I had hit something solid infront of me. I put the car in first and tryed to pull away but stalled, then tryed again with revs and stalled again. It felt as tho I was trying to drive againt a brick wall it wouldnt move. Put the car in reverse which it did the drove forward again and there it is the invisable wall stopped dead. Reversed car off the road as by then there was some angry gits not willing to help me looking at me as if I was dum, then tryed to drive forward and everything was ok. Drove the car home at a very slow pace for another 2 miles and everything felt good, but to be honest I`m very scared to drive it just incase it does it again but at a higher speed. Am I rite in thinking this could be a gearbox problem? Please help as I need my car for work and everyday use

Sounds like the gear linkage has tried to select 2 gears at once. has anything fell down into the gearlinkage on to of the box at all. I would also make sure you are not losing any fluids under the box, as they do occasionally like to spit a diff rivet, but that usually stops the car there and then. I take it the clutch feels normal?.

Gearbox oil was changed a couple of months ago with oill from the dealers. All the linkages are fine and as for leaks thats a no. Clutch feels fine but its been on my mind for a while as I bought the car with no history and took a chance. When it came to a stop I pushed the car back after i had tryed to drive it forward. I could bush it back then pushed it forward and it stopped again at the same point. But like I quoted I manged to reverse the car a few meters back to get it off the road and then all was well. I know in the back of my mind there is a problem should I bite the bullet and start looking for a replacment gearbox?

Diff starting to come apart? Could be a rivet coming out?

What will happen then if I keep on driving? I need the car for work will I be taking a big risk if I drive it?

I'll suggest the diff too. Can't see why reversing it back a bit helped though. ??

Usually when a rivet comes out it goes though the gear box casing

+1 rivet may be breaking up and starting to jam on casing inners, if it is, when it finally goes, it probably will punch a hole.

You may just catch it before it does any damage and then you can replace all the rivets with bolts

I wouldnt drive it mate!

Start looking for a cheap box. Any o2j box will do for now and get tours in and have it overhauld with bolts and if you can afford an lsd? Then put new clutch on and your awesome new box.

If money is tight then just look for an eha o2j box.

Money is a little tight at the moment, was saving to buy my 2 kids for xmass lol but without car I`m stuck for work. I have had a look on ebay for a box and there is alot for the 18T, there is more for the VW Golf than Skoda, and also I agree while the box is off put a new clutch in also. What clutch should I replace old one with as I have seen on here about upgrading it to a solid flywheel is that what you are all doing? Cheers guys

So long as its an O2J gearbox mate it will fit fine but ratios will be off slightly depending on version you get.

EHA is iirc the fastest ratio and the one in the vRS so that is ideal. Others from the golf gti turbo will be ok too. Not sure what other cars the eha box came in tho.

As for clutch. A solid fly is the cheapest option hence why we go for it. Also nicer feel.

The g60 fly and sachs clutch or valeo are good onesto go for. Cann be had from euro car parts and you get discount with codes.

Or off ebay there is techniclutch which some dont like. They are a tad slow but just keep on at them n they will post it.

I got the carbon kevlar kit with lightened fly for nearly 200. Was a good deal really. Bowders1 got same kit too. He has his fitted too so ask him. Last i heard it was spot on. I not fitted mine yet tho so he is a good gauge. Plus he drives his car lol unlike me. I never driven mine properly.

i got a box needs a good clean and maybe a lick of paint but it came off a good working car

The Vrs I own may already have the solid fly but wont know till box is off. I guess at 106 k miles it will have defo had a clutch before I bought it. The car had 92 k almost 2 year ago but the problem was no history so no idea what its had. I`m so glad I have a very close friend who does get very good discount at Euro so if I have to upgrade clutch this will be the route I will take. Cheers!!!!

I would be very gratefull to take full advantage of the offer for your gearbox. You say it came off a working car? Is it what I`m looking for 02j EHA gearbox and do you know what sort of miles its done? I would have to orginise a collection due to me living in Middlesbrough, and as it happens my best mate works for a pallet company thats based all over UK just needs to be strapped to a pallet lol

Not necesarry lol. My clutch was mint when swapped at 91. Could of gone on for ages mind i drive like a gran lol.

You get 30% off ne way lol just go online n see what the price is.
