Why does my rear door handle not sit properly?

Featured Replies

I've done everything I can think of to sort it, I've adjusted the Bowden cable but it either then doesn't open or sits as in the pic. I've also checked the metal plate on the back of the handle and that's fine. Any ideas?

When removing the handle did you hold it open when undoing the T20 screw?

Assuming the handle is clipped in correctly behind the lever in the door it can only be something broken on this bit.

The cable isn't what pulls it in, the sprung lever does that.

Yeah held it open when I undid the t20 in the little hole on the door. Guess it must have something broken then. It's just although the handle isn't being pulled in enough by the cable but the more I move the cable towards the outside the dor then won't open properly.

As said the cable doesn't pull the handle in. The lever in the mech does.

I had this, there is a spring lever in the middle of the mech, if you didnt hold the handle open or didnt release the t20 screw enough the lever slips off the spring, and there fore doesnt pull the handle in!

I had this on all 4 of my doors as the so called pro made a **** of it, ive had to strip all the doors down, carriers out, mech out, hold the spring out with a screwdriver, re-fit the mech, re-fit handle then and only then pull out the screwdriver, f there is an easier way i dont know it

Enjoy

Something has gone wrong with one of my rear doors. It doesn't open inside or out and the lock still works so its within the handle I hope.

Want to get it sorted but don't really want to go ripping it all part as I have no idea what I'm doing! If anyone local to me knows what they are doing I will happily pay :D

Where is the bowden cable clip on the handle? Check that, make sure that its the same as the others!

If not, you will most likely have to strip it down!

If your near edinburgh ad help

Sounds like its dead locked, this normally happens when the cable to the handle is to tight.

Happened to my drivers side rear, had to strip it down and figure out the lock mech! Eventually sorted it! If you need more detailed help pm me!

The technician who remapped my car said it wasn't dead locked as the lock was still working?

The cable is all the way loose.

I'm north Wales / Shropshire

That could be your problem, the cable wont be tight enough to release the lock, try and bring it out!

Basically the cable wont be pulling the lock and the cable has to much slack, the lock can still fire when its deadlocked, it just wont open the doors and the handles wont work!

I've tried to bring it out, but no luck, ill strip it all down at some point, just worried about opening a tin of worms and creating more problems

Itl be fine, take time, hopefully youve got bolts and not rivets, i had rivets and have had to use self tappig screws

Thanks mate. Mines 55 plate so I assume rivets. Self tappers doesn't bother me as I've just bought some to do my splitter :D

I used 2 per hole of a rivet them covered the holes with duct tape haha!

Sorry i cant quote for some reason. I didnt see the last statement fro you Tech1e! Can i somehow sort the mech on the handle to make the handle pull in? Without removing loads of the inner door?

Depends on what's happened to it.

I'd try the whole process again but don't put the lock blank in and watch what happens to the lever.

Id say no, the spring is very tight and takes alot of effort to move into position with the lever.

Yes - you can. I did this other day - I used a wire cable tie (not a plastic one) and fed it through the door handle and around the spring mechanism. I then pulled the spring mechanism out and held it place with a pair of pliers. I then refitted the door handle and removed the cable tie by pulling it with the pliers.

Jobs a gooden. No dismantling of the door carrier required. I did it on 3 doors, worked fine.

Just an update but fixed it today. It had indeed come away from the spring loaded mechanism and was sat infront of it so managed to loop some wire round it and pull it forward then slid the handle back in and behind it. Sits fine now!

Thanks again everyone!

******* **** ****, wasted 8 hours of my life taking all four door carriers off etc to fix this!
