Two Superbs, Seven years, First post!

Featured Replies

Found this site for the first time today looking for advice - enjoyed reading ten pages of forums!

Bought a 2yo diesel Superb in 05 having enjoyed a ride in one in Prague (daft reason to buy a car - rear seat comfort!). Replaced it in 2008 when we were looking at a Fabia for my wife and I spotted a 55 reg 2.8 V6 Elegance on the forecourt. Folding rear seat backs, heated seats, satnav, and the most comfortable long-distance rider (other than a V12 XJS) that I've ever had. I'd expect them to roll around, but they don't - great cars.

Not sure whether to hang on to this car (65k miles), the dealer is only offering me £1700 against a new one - usual Skoda deal, they pay the VAT. It's coming up for a service & (free) MOT, has one or two minor issues (electrical, see other posts) and a couple of bumper scrapes that could do with being fixed. I've avoided having the timing belt replaced (£450) - is this a genuine need? If it went the car would be scrap, given its value.

The other significant problem is the amount of oil it has always used, certainly more than a litre per 1000 miles at around £9 a litre. In a sense I don't mind (!) because having new oil in the sump isn't all bad, but where is it going? None on the drive!

I'm also looking at the Mazda CX-5, their new SUV, but I'm concerned that I might regret it after my first long journey. My car before the Superbs was a Mercedes 190E and I could hardly get out of the car after a two-hour trip, I don't even think about it in this car, a touring trip up to Scotland last year was effortless.

So, do I keep the Superb until it falls apart? It's depreciated £8k in four years and can't go down much further - the Merc did 175k and I sold it for a grand after 16 years. Must do the sums and decide if the reduced running costs and ownership of a new car compensate for the massive depreciation.

Any advice would be very welcome: cambelt, oil, new car - and a new bumper!

Hi and welcome aboard.

Can't help you with the information you need but welcome to the forum.

Welcome to Brisky

Seeing as you have had no one suggest anything, then I will be the 1st.

Price up the repairs, & if they come to more than £1700, then take the Dealer offer, the vat off the car can be well worth a few quid as well. Also bear in mind that there is a New Octavia due next year which is rumoured as being the same size as the Superb, with the new Superb due sometime 2014( according to press).

Many thanks for the welcomes and the advice, much appreciated. Interesting info about the new Octavia.

Ordering a new car now would mean I wouldn't have the cost of the service either......worth considering!

Hello TerrySuperb and welcome along

P.S. Forgot to add - maybe consider an EX -demo car ?

Replaced it in 2008 when we were looking at a Fabia for my wife and I spotted a 55 reg 2.8 V6 Elegance on the forecourt. Folding rear seat backs, heated seats, satnav, and the most comfortable long-distance rider (other than a V12 XJS) that I've ever had. I'd expect them to roll around, but they don't - great cars.

Welcome along Terry, did you get the Superb instead of the Fabia or did she get one as well? Superb V6 not quite like a Fabia!

Personally I'd get the Superb sorted & have some classy cheap motoring. Now is when you reap the benefits if the depreciation has already happened?
