In Car DVD Player

Featured Replies

We are taking our 2 year old daughter on a longish car journey next week.

It's only 150 miles / 3 hours but I'd like to ensure it is as painless as possible.

She's really into Pepper Pig and Ben & Holly's Little Kingdom (those with young daughters will understand!) so a mix of these can keep her entertained for hours.

I'm therefore looking to buy an in car DVD player. I don't want to spend a fortune (less than £100) and I only need one screen (would prefer 9" rather than 7").

Do any of you have any recommendations?

What do I need to look out for (SD Card, USB compatibility - is this required?)

Thanks!

We have a Hello Kitty branded DVD player that we use with our 3 year old. It's basic but does the job. Got a small screen but looks ok from our 3 year old's point of view. Got a remote control too. Comes with a holder that you just strap to one of the front headrests. Don't know the cost as I didn't buy it but definitely nowhere near £100.

Brimma had some portable DVD's for sale in the last 2 weeks.

Does she get car sick?

Might not work out if she does. I can hardly look at my watch in a car without feeling queasy.

Don't mention boats either :envy:

Thanks Dan,

Is it this one?

I can't find any mention of the headrest strap.

When strapped to the headrest is it in the L-Shape configuration (like an open laptop) or can the base be opened enough so that it sits flat against the back of the seat?

Cheers Graham,

Brimma's are good value at £60, especially as they have a 10" screen. Will drop him a PM to see if they are still available.

I'm not sure with them being like a laptop whether she'll kick at it and break it. This is why I was looking specifically at the dedicated car ones. However these fold-up types are much more attractively priced.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Haha, not sure yet, this is the first long journey we have taken her on this year. She often falls asleep so a DVD player may not even be needed.

We are off up to Northumberland and hope to get across to the Farne Islands on a boat - that should be a good test for motion sickness!

Yeah that's the one. The screen pivots so that when you close the player, the screen actually points outwards, so you can then put it in the holder which straps round the headrest.

You don't need DVD players for car journey's, just play "I Spy" for instance and have a conversation plus lots of things to do to pass the time if you are creative.

One thing that makes me laugh is a geezer around here has a BMW X5 with DVD screens in all the head rests he's always driving about with a DVD playing on the screens and 9 times out of 10 he is the only person in the car.

Your probably right, she'll sleep for a good hour or so and will be quite content for another hour talking with me and the wife, however if she starts getting restless the DVD player with Pepper Pig could well prove to be the saviour!

I've bought one now anyway, Halfords price matched Tesco (who'd run-out) on this Nextbase 9" LED slimline unit for £80 with a free DVD so got a bargain in the end...
