02 Fabia 1.4 mpi lumpy idle.

Featured Replies

I have recently bought this Fabia which has an annoying fault. The car drives and pulls perfectly. It only has a genuine 32K on the clock, and has not been abused. At idle revs ( sat at lights, junctions etc) the revs dip and rise causing a slight shudder as though its going to stall. The car has never stalled yet,it feels as though it could.Right the strange bit is - if i am coasting down a hill out of gear with the engine ticking over, the revs rise to just under 1000rpm and stay solid. Then STILL coasting if i slow down and stop ( still out of gear ) the revs become lumpy again. Also i have noticed every now and again while sat idleing the speedo jumps up and down from 0 - about 15 mph. When the speedo is bouncing around the revs seem to follow.?? Could there be any link between the revs and speedo sensor ????Just to throw another spanner in the works i had the engine managment light come on ,the error code was- 16825 EVAP Emission Control Srrect Flow : P0441. I have cleared the error but it came back after about a week.

Any ideas????????????

A rough idle is normal to some extent for the 1.4mpi. Apparently due to EU emissions legislation, the idle is kept close to stalling.

The revs will rise slightly when the car detects speed, I believe this is an anti-stall measure employed by the ECU, which means it is applying a little throttle for you - almost like cruise control.

The speedo changing from 0 to 15 while not moving is unusual though. The fact the revs change suggest the car thinks it actually is doing that speed. Does your model have ABS?

Evap emission flow would probably relate to the charcoal cannister valve thingy. I'm not quite sure where that is - it could be hidden somewhere behind the wheel arch trim on the side where the petrol cap is.

Yes its quite common for the MPI to be a little lumpy, One thing i would suggest is to see what the condition of the throttle body is like as it may benefit from a good clean out inside

Yes certainly worth doing with any MPI. The crankcase is vented from the top of the rocker cover straight to the throttle body, and all the oily gunk follows it and builds up on the throttle body.

Other common issue to look out for on the mpi is thermostat. These are known to internally self-destruct, which means you need to buy a whole new housing. As there's no unusual error codes relating to the temp sender I would imagine in this case your thermostat is probably ok.

Mine has always wobbled but never stalled.

Wobble is even more noticable with the uprated dog bone mount lol

I would suggest clearing the fault codes and checking in 50 miles or so. My 1.4 mpi had a similar Evap error, but after it was cleared (and a full ECU reset due to other faults) it never came back.

Regarding the lumpy Idle, as said before the engine would "retard" to save fuel/reduce emissions, hence the lumpy idle, two fixes ive also seen suggested were cleaning the Throttle Body (a good through clean) & Replacing the coolant Temp sensor on the thermostat (im not sure how this can help the Idle)

Regarding the speedo, ABS measures the wheel speeds, and i believe it used that to calculate the wheel speed therefore the cars speed and I think they may have used a different system for cars without ABS that used the engine/Gearbox speed (Correct me if im wrong Tech1e).

My MPI didnt have ABS, and i know that at slow speeds the speedo was a bit iffy, If your not sure if it has ABS, two (safe) methods, either take off the fuse box cover and check if there is a Fuse 25 (http://www.fabia-vrs...e-panel-layout/) OR alternatively contact skoda and give them the VIN number and ask if that car had ABS.
